Some thoughts

Postby Nacho » Fri Sep 26, 2008 8:02 am

--BL had 2 ints but should have had 3-4. He threw into triple coverage on the Sanders td catch. Got lucky. Threw high across the middle and got lucky. Last int was a killer.

--Our D wasn't going to stop Tulane with 2 minutes to go. Should have gone for the onsides. Bad call. Instead of possibly giving the O a chance to win the D was given a chance to lose and they did. They got overpowered by the Tulane O-Line.

--Who is our backup QB now? I'm guessing Braden.

Crisco was responsible for that first interception and pretty awful drops killed any momentum we were gaining in the first half...also

You mean "Instead of possibly giving the special teams a chance to lose, the D was given a chance to lose and they did".

And it would have to be Braden Smith as the new back up for next week. I doubt Jones would trot out a walk-on or a Willis, a WR.

Some of those drops were due to bad throws. The play guy didn't seem to get it. He thought every pass BL threw was catchable. BL doesn't put any touch on the ball. Every throw is a rocket.

Also Tulane played turtle in the second half and gave us a chance to come back. They didn't stick with their origianl game plan and went very conserative. We did have a couple of nice turnovers which got us started.

The good news- IMHO we looked much better the second half, we got some turnovers, had someTD's, had fewer interceptions and the D looked a little better.
The bad news- too many lost opportunities, dropped passes, stupid penalties, poor pass defence, and-let's face it our undersized D just isn't going to stop many teams.
At least we looked competitive tonight- no W but much less of an embarrassment than TT and friggie high.

GO PONIES!!!

For the most part they were not only catchable, but the receivers have to catch those. Yes, BLM, has one speed, but that doesn't give the receivers a pass. On the Sanders miss that resulted in the interception. If the ball is thrown softly it is either batted down or intercepted by the defenders that are nearby. The ball was in perfect position and Sanders blew it. This is not the first time Sanders as done this. If he wants to play on Sunday, he has got to learn how to catch the fast ball and he will.

BLM has two areas he needs to improve on before he develops a "touch." First of all he needs to learn to make reads all through the game and not telegraph so often who he is going to throw to. Second, he needs to improve his accuracy. Too often he is a little off and the receiver is called upon to make a circus catch. I am confident that the latter will happen, the former is yet to be determined.

The better team won. SMU beat themselves with turnovers, dropped balls, and penalties....characteristics of a young team. I did see improvement and was impressed how the team played in the second half. Take away the dropped balls in the first half and the outcome may have been different.

Beware of moral victories earned in the second half of blowout games. Seen that before. The only thing that second half really told you was that the team did not quit probably as the result of one wicked arse chewing at halftime from JJ.

I just can't believe that SMU is fielding a team that cannot match up physically with the likes of Tulane and Rice. Even our qbs are physically small. We do have a big punter I guess. I know it is thought we are finally on level admissions playing field now, but what about those big changes they made back in circa 2002 supposedly? those were supposed to make a difference. I wonder if it can really be said that turner is a friend of athletics. I like the guy, but how can he watch this and let it go on for so long?

Please do not bring reality into any discussions. We are comfortable in our delusions and do not want them disturbed by facts. :)
