No excuses, we got beat.....but.....the no call on the pass interference penalty was big. I have never seen the "uncatchable" call used when the offending DB actually had his hands on the ball while knocking the receiver down. Extremely bad call and I hope that official is reprimanded accordingly. A TD there rather than a FG COULD have made a difference in the game.

I agree. It was a poor interpretation of the rules at best. And it may have made a difference late in the game. One doesn't know how it would have affected the outcome.
That said, I agree it was not a game breaker and we need to overcome things like that in the future. Now if the call had made the difference between field goal range or out of range, then it would have had a major impact.
Re: No excuses, we got beat.....but.....
Was the call "uncatchable" or that they both had a right to go for the ball?

I didnt have sound at the bar, someone tell us! It tastes better when served from a Bowl (game)!
Re: No excuses, we got beat.....but.....
It was a penalty, because the flag was thrown. It was overruled by one of the officials as being uncatchable. Jones argued so long that he eventually called a time out so he could continue to argue. I do not care if a game is a blowout or a close game, I depend on the officials to maintain the integrity of the game so the true outcome can be determined. That was not the case. I was very surprised to hear during the broadcast that it was a mixed crew from both CUSA and the Big 12. They said they were mixing crews to try and develope consistancy between conferences. That is ok with me during non conference games but seems a little odd to be doing that during conference play. All those who believe in psycho kinesis, raise my hand
The Big II!! Oh no, back in the day the Big II conference officials were the absolute worse in the nation. Now of course we have WAC and CUSA officials to hold the banner of the worse officials. Now asking the Big II officials in is a step towards disaster.
The pitiful CUSA officials will get the illusion that all college officials are at the Big II's standards. Thus, our CUSA officials will believe that they really are not all that far off from the rest of the nation's conferences. The CUSA officials will get a false sense of security that they are almost the norm. Oh please, get us some SEC officials to bring some dose of reality to the CUSA officials.
McCann's penalty looked pretty obvious. McCann cut off the receiver’s path to the ball. Had McCann been going for the ball then he doesn't get that call against him. Instead, he cut off the receiver. The same play was called against an Arkyland DB during the SMU-Arkland game in 1982. To this day, the Arkyland faithful think that a DB can cut off a receiver’s right to the ball. Not exactly the highest caliber of college ball available in the state.
The DB has a right to the ball but his right to the ball doesn't trump the reciever right to the ball.
The McCann call could have gone either way, but I think it was the right one. The picked up penalty was a bad call. The pass was easily within reach of our receiver. At first, one of the guys I was with thought they were both going for the ball, but you could see on the replay that the defender first put a shoulder into our receiver, then went for the ball. This should be the same as a push off. Instead of a 1st down inside the 15, it was 4th down. A TD there would have had us within a TD early in the 4th.
If the ball is "uncatchable", why is the defender interfering in the first place?
"It'd be nice to see Jesse Henderson break one here."
Anyone who can remember a penalty called during a game 26 years ago must have something going for him/her. Impressive!
We all do-it was the biggest play in the game to clinch the only Cotton Bowl we've been to in 42 years. Also remind the Root-Hawgs that even after that play SMU got something like 100 yards total offense to Arkansas' 6 . They were outplayed down the stretch. They are lucky Dickerson didn't break that pass out in the flat on the 2nd to last play. Forgot the kids name but SMU completely fooled the Arkansas defense and somehow got Dickerson one on one with only a single defender standing in the way of a 60 yard TD. Arkansas DB made one of the greatest open field tackles ever.
