Jones/Reinebold e:60 being reshown RIGHT NOWTurn on ESPN2.
I haven't seen it yet, but I've heard it yanks on every heartstring you've got.
I was a fan of Coach Jones and Coach Reinebold before I watched that. After seeing that, I will cheer for those guys as long as I live, whether they're at SMU or elsewhere. Hell, they could coach at Froggy High or Notre Dame or UT or for the Dallas Cowboys and I'll cheer for them. We have some absolutely amazing coaches who are even better men.
If you can watch that story and not at least tear up, you're a lot tougher than I am. Kudos to ESPN. That was a truly beautiful story.
If you want to watch the show online, it is at:

That's what I thought, too. How does he say THAT on camera?
I know Coach Jones has said things were operating on a shoestring budget out there, but surely they have a PR guy who can conjure up a better answer than that. Actually, if I was the PR guy out there, I wouldn't have let Coach McMackin get near a camera for this story. It would have been the gratuitous "Hawaii declined comment" if I'd been involved.
Thanks for posting...I saw part of it last Tues. night w.o. sound at dinner and was happy to finally see it. What a group of special people!
We really are lucky to have those guys here, because it is their quality as people, in addition to their quality as coaches that the kids should learn from.
Anybody else think we should add another Grad Assistant position for him, and let him continue his doctorate here?
The donkey's name is Kiki.
On a side note, anybody need a patent attorney? Good, Bad...I'm the one with the gun.
With the resources available to SMU, he could do it. He might need some help, but he could do it. I say do it. The winners in this deal would be the players, administrators, students, and us. I hope to see this fellow on the sideline in the next couple of years, working as a coach. He's a Warrior, but I betcha he would make all of us better Mustangs. ![]() "Moderation in all things, and especially in Absoluts [vodka]." The Benediction, Doc Breeden, circa 1992
They re-aired the episode again last night. Glad I set the DVR, really a great story. I echo the sentiments on McMackin's comments. A little hollow. It looks bad no matter how you paint it, but at least he could have said, "I still see him as a coach and a valued member of our staff, but when I took over I decided to reorganize the structure. Brian is a Warrior. It's just unfortunate that his new title sounds like a demotion, but that was the title available in the structure of our staff." Or some such. To say, "He never really was a coach," even if he feels that way, is just sad, especially in the context of the story.
I was mulling the possibilities of SMU offering him the same position (and moving the whole family), but I kind of get the feeling he is Hawaii through and through. But, Reinebold did end the piece with his statement that "I know ... that one day again we will work together." So who knows? ![]() Eric Dickerson in Pony Excess "I've love winning man, it's like better than losing." - Ebby Calvin "Nuke" LaLoosh
The statement by Coach Mack was obviously cut short. I'm sure Coach Mack got punked by the reporter to make him look like the bad guy on this piece. Coach Mack has always said that Brian is a Warrior and he'll always will be one. I really admired Coach Reinebold before this piece came out but I admire him even more now (no worries, no man crush here). JJ just jumped on his bandwagon and stole a lot of the credit. This was all Coach Reinebold! I was really pissed that JJ took him to SMU. He was the second most coach responsible for Hawaii's great season last year. Coach Mack being the first. Reinebold is a great recruiter, I'm sure that more then 75% of SMU's commits are Reinebold's. I believe Reinebold wants to come back to Hawaii. His "I know ... that one day again we will work together." statement means he coming back to Hawaii. Just pray you guys don't loss him, as he will be the one that takes SMU to the promise land, not JJ.
How old is his son? If his son likes going to school in Highland Park, I think Reinebold will be here for JJ's 5 years. Reinebold seems very sincere. It's nice to watch pregame at Ford, when he's on the sideline and the team hasn't made it out yet. He grabs a football and throws it back and forth to kids in the stands.
