Deonte McDade had 6 catches for 75 yards, 2 runs for 9 yards and a 20 yard TD in a big 48-14 victory over a pretty good Waco team.

Ennis had another big victory beating rival Waxahachie 35-20. McDade had at least one TD shown on the Fox Sports Highlite show of about 20 yards-looked like defender lost him and McDade trotted into the endzone.

Good article on Ennis mentioning McDade.

Looks like Rivals has done some updating on their rankings. McDade is now a three star and the #83 athlete.

I agree, McDade at a 5.6 3 star at that. A top 100 at the athlete position (#83). One thing about it is that highly ranked players like to go where other highly ranked players are going. This give SMU 6 top 100 players at their position in the country. Padron and Joubert could move up as well.

What percentage of the class must be legitimate 3 stars before Stallion is willing to say "okay, SMU has turned this corner for this year in recruiting"?

I get frustrated at you, Stal, but generally, I will go with you on a conservative approach to this assessment.

If we have 6 out of 25 players (or whatever number SMU brings in), that's clearly not enough compared to TCU, our closest comparison (private school in urban/suburban area). However, at what number, assuming no 4 stars, do you think that critical mass begins to form?

First of all, we're not going to consistently compete with TCU for another couple of years, and that's assuming our recruiting classes keep heading in this direction. But you gotta look at the past classes that we've had more recently. They don't even compare to this one, kind sir.

I hate to rain on anybody's parade. But here's a cold dose of reality for you Rivals recruitniks. Thus far, June Jones' first class (with a full year of recruiting) doesn't rank nearly as highly as Phil Bennett's first (true) class.

Bennett had ten 3-star athletes in his '03 class: Boren, Hall, Cleveland, Muse, Phillips, Sturdivant, Jones, Massey, Meeks and McGee compared to the six 3-stars we have in this class.

That's not a big deal to me, because Rivals really isn't that knowledgeable (IMHO), I don't think talent evaluation was the prior coaching staff's strength, and I think Jones (at some point) will be able to get more out of the talent he has.

But to say this is the best class we've had in years -- solely based on rankings -- is wrong. It's not even close... yet.

And per the recruiting services Cavan in '97 and '98 did better than Bennett ever did. That was the last time we competed equally with TCU for recruits.

But agreed. I've got faith that JJ's gonna get it done with whoever we bring in here.

Well we still have a few more scholarships to offer, let's see how this thing turns out in the end. But it is still good that we have several players that are top 100 in the country at their position. Also, from a recruiting standpoint players like to go where highly ranked and recruited players a going and nobody hardly wants to go where less recruited and lower ranked players are committing. This could attract other good players to the program if they see good players coming to SMU.
