Improvement on our part or a bad game by Tulsa?I saw a lot of things that were much better on both sides of the ball last night than I saw earlier in the season...it hasn't translated into any wins (so I know it doesn't matter much right now) but since the 2nd half of the Tulane game it does seem as though it has clicked a little more for our guys. BLM needs to cut down on the picks but he seemed to do a better job than I had ever seen him do going through his reads and getting it to the right reciever. The run game was used much more extensively last night, which very well might have played a part in BLM looking sharper (kept the DBs a little more honest than we usually do).
Anyway - your opinions? Are we getting better or did we just see a Tulsa team that overlooked us last night and came in expecting the easy win? I think it may be a little of both, to be honest.
Hard to say, but this team played well - the best game of the year. Tulsa did come out of the gate slow, but we made plays to make it happen. We could have easily folded after they took the lead, especially BLM after he threw the pick that gave them the lead and the same for the defense after giving up that horrible 4th down TD. Both came back and kept playing hard.

We ran the ball because they gave us the run, but we still sucked doing it. They were playing a three down front and we could not block them with five. Same thing last season. Teams no we can't run so they put 3 in the box and drop 8. TU was not that good. I was really surprised how much hype they had coming into this game and how bad they looked. BLM was the better QB Saturday. I see why he sat for four years. TU sucked! BLM is the real deal. We have enough skill position players to win some games. We will not until our fat boys get fatter and better. That is the recruiting hurdle we must cross immediately, but we will not because of the still of offense JJ runs. We will get a bunck of small fast receivers and small linemen. No tightends, no running backs, no QB's that have a knack to run and no run blocking linemen. Our offensive line is going to get somebody killed. BLM may not make it through the year. Houston defense, which is better than TCU's will kill us.

We had 151 rushing yards.......In the "Run and Shoot" offense...... How is that sucking? ![]()
I can't imagine SMU playing a better game than they did last nite. Yes we are getting better-than where we were at the start of the season. However, I do wonder-what the hell was the Tulsa Offensive Coordinator(who I have a lot of respect for) thinking by running the ball in the first half. Once Tulsa decided to utilize their most explosive players and attack the obvious weakness in SMU's pass defense (and I don't mean just DBs) then it became a track meet. SMU is becoming a tougher run defense team-not great but better. But remember this game was not unlike about 5 losses last year-so improvement might not register on the W-L record.
I was wondering that too, but the more I think about it the more it starts to make sense. I think Tulsa was in control the whole game. Any time we pulled away a little bit, they would go and get another score, then go back to the run game. My theory is that they needed a real game situation to work on their running game, guessing they will need it at some point down the road. We provided a perfect opportunity for them to do that. They could run the ball all they wanted without worrying about falling behind too much. Then at the end they knew they could go score what they needed to with the pass and secure the win.
I noticed that a true freshman was covering the receiver on the 4th and forever TD pass. He was praised for his work last week and I am certain feels pretty bad today. Hopefully he has a short term memory needed to be a good cover corner. It was in Bell's area of the field however. Were they in man and Bell on another receiver, or was Bell out of the game for some reason? BTW, loved the hit Bell put on Slick Shelly.

Yeah, this game was exactly like about 5 losses last year which is why I don't consider last years team a 1-11 team. Hopefully, this years team won't actually be 1 - 11.

At least 5 of those run should have been broken for scores. We are two timid, JWill can run itC! I predicted we would rush for over 200. We did two years ago.
Stop reading newspapers and listening to anaylist predict [deleted] and go watch them play. Sumlin has that bunch in Houston on a roll. CUSA west better be ware. TU play like they did against us and Houston wins CUSA west.
Its called practice. Thay were just using us as a scrimmage. Much about the same way TT has used us the last three years. Schools schedule us early for preseason puposes. Plus coaching is a fraternity. JJ has spoken to all the coaches we are playing this season and explained his no nonsensen no expectations approach to this disaster of a program. His exact words, we arent worth a [deleted] so take it easy on us. Could you run the ball some so I can see what I got on the D-Line. Don't hit my baby BLM to hard, he is just learning. We have 5 years to build this thing. They paid me 2mill a year to win one time in 5 years, maybe twice. What a bunch of idiots.
