Shouldn't accept losing. I've been disappointed in that I also wanted the recruiting chit of a winning season.
I realized a few things during the game, though.
The team is improving, and it doesn't appear to be in fits and starts.
Jones doesn't need a winning season this season to be in the game for recruits. Certainly would help the story, but this is June Jones & Co., not Cavan or Bennett, or even Rossley. Jones and his staff on their crappiest day are an order of magnitude better at recruiting than anybody else SMU has had as a coach...except perhaps Forrest Gregg...and he had the toughest restrictions of all, so he gets a bit of a pass.
I've had a tough time with this...but I got a close look (my seats are literally right behind the O-line...I can hear McKnight coaching every minute that the line is in front of him)...and these guys...they play for Jones and his assistants. They play for each other. And win/lose/draw, they want it. I saw Martin on 3 carries toward the end of the game, and I saw passion like I haven't in over two years.
So yeah, Moral victories suck. But this wasn't a moral victory. It wasn't a victory at all...but it was damn hard work, and they should be proud nonetheless because they played their asses off Saturday night.
And I am not going to downplay that fact in the least...not now. Let's see what they bring to Houston at Ford this Saturday night.
