This Miracle on Mockingbird won't be performed in 3 hrs...I haven't been on the board since just after we hired JJ, and when I signed on tonight I was somewhat surprised to read the criticisms of JJ.
Certainly, there are many areas where the team needs to improve, but did you really expect JJ to instantly win or even be competitive against the likes of Texas Tech or TCU? The players who were recruited by Bennett play their tails off (as do the ones JJ brought in) but they don't all fit into JJ's system. This is a transition period. You work with what you've got. The real Miracle on Mockingbird will be to transform a team that hasn't been competitive for 20+ years into a team that is competitive, first at the conference level and then at the national level. But it won't happen over night. Repeat: it will not happen over night. If it was easy, it would already have been done. We've waited 20+ years. A few more won' t kill us. You gotta have faith, to quote a song from my schooldays. I HATE the University of Texas!
OT: Mustang1991, that's a great avatar. Not my most favorite politicians, but ahhhhh youth. We have all been there done that.
![]() SMU's first president, Robert S. Hyer, selected Harvard Crimson and Yale Blue as SMU's colors to symbolize SMU's high academic standards. We are one of the few Universities to have school colors with real meaning...and we just blow them off.
And 1991 ought to know...he's missed one game in the past, what, since 1993...that's 15 years? That was when Hurricane Rita came up through East Texas in 2005.
What a guy! "Moderation in all things, and especially in Absoluts [vodka]." The Benediction, Doc Breeden, circa 1992
I've seen a lot of really bad football. Ford Stadium makes it more tolerable, but it's still hell losing.
I HATE the University of Texas!
Re: This Miracle on Mockingbird won't be performed in 3 hrs...
I get so sick and tired of hearing this system [deleted]. JJ has sold you some [deleted]. The game is called football. It consist of blocking, tackling, running, catching and throwing. We have people that can do that. Why complicate things with this so called system. Its playground football. We line up and throw the ball. JJ does not want to win with PB players. He just wants BLM to look good enough this season so the next 5-8 years he has you sold on the run and [deleted]. I ask you again, if this offense is so great, why are we the only team running it. On top of that one of the worst teams in D1 football trying to implement this (system).
Re: This Miracle on Mockingbird won't be performed in 3 hrs.
Some years ago, some punk coach from Valdosta State learned all he could from JJ and the run and shoot of which you speak. Any idea where that young punk coach wound up?
Re: This Miracle on Mockingbird won't be performed in 3 hrs.
I would guess Texas Tech. Cant answer your question, but please give me the answer. I have one question for you. Which team won the national championship running the run and shoot? JJ did not invent this offense. He learned it from someone else some 30 yrs ago. JJ was a young coach.
Houston did a pretty damn good job with it in the late 80s/early 90s.
You talk out of your [deleted] more than anyone I've ever seen. You don't know a damn thing, but you throw stuff out there that you've heard or that is generic enough that you end up being able to point back and say "see, I wasn't wrong!!". Go back under your rock.
Re: This Miracle on Mockingbird won't be performed in 3 hrs.
Yes I was talking about Leach. You can add Hal Mumme to the same conversation. And the offense you see at Kansas. Who cares if JJ inveted the R&S? Did Switzer invent the wishbone? Did Meyer invent the I or the power I? Stoops did okay with his version of a R&S/spread, and he was a defensive guy...Mangino, Long, Mumme, and Leach all had an impact on Oklahoma's offense
Ok, now three teams in 30 years! BYU, Houston and Hawaii.
Re: This Miracle on Mockingbird won't be performed in 3 hrs.
I did pretty good on that one, yea? You never answered my question about National Championship. The answer is BYU with Jim McMann. This is a gimmick offense unless we can field a team like TT who consistently go 8-4. Our recruiting will never be THAT good. Get my point!

And BYU doesn't run the run and shoot and never has. Just further shows you don't know [deleted].
no, but Leach was a BYU follower growing up, and is said to have been influenced by LaVell Edwards. I agree with the second part of 03Mustang's post as well.
They were the first to run it in the late 70 to early 80's. The old offensive coordinator that went to Louisville with Kragthope (eventually getting fired) was the offensive coord or QB coach? Long time ago, sorry for the skipping around but I can look it up and get back to you. Leach was on his staff and learned the system later on as well as the UH and later JJ. BYU won national championship in 80 i believe. Actually 1984 with Robbie Bosco. Coach was Lavell Edwards.
their offensive coordinator from 82-99...their most successful years and the era of which you speak.. and QB coach was Norm Chow.
