JR. day at SMU last Saturday

Postby Stampede » Tue Feb 25, 2003 5:50 pm

SMU had over 70 football players on campus for our first "Jr. Day". My understanding.....Some real studs were present ...i.e. Chris Smith from Allen, Quinn (Garland?) and a stud from Denton Ryan with the first name Derrick? Also, a couple of warhorses from Okla. present. All the way around, most impressive group we have had. Bennett is really attracting and going after the best!!

Stallion, have you any news or help on any of these players?

Is there any way to get a list of all of those who attended? This is good news and, believe me, it is going to get better and better. I hope we are able to remember these days of laying the foundation when we finally make it to the big time. We will appreciate it that much more. It will be fun to deal with those who want to jump on the bandwagon!!!

Chris Smith (6'5", 245, 4.7) of Allen HS is a very strong, quick defensive lineman who uses his speed to beat blockers, but also is stronger than he looks, or his weight might suggest. He is believed to be still growing, and could add another inch or two, and easily will increase his strength and weight. He's pretty highly thought of in the early stages of 2004 recruiting. Many have projected him as a first-team or second-team all-state player in 2003.

J.D. Quinn (6'3," 265, 5.0) of Garland HS is a very sound blocker who plays mean. He might be a tackle this year at GHS, but is projected as a guard or center in college. He has very thick thighs and backside, giving him a low center of gravity and making him hard to knock off his feet. Like most HS juniors, he will add more strength, but he's better-developed (physically) than many players his age. I haven't seen him on any preseason all-state teams, but he's one of those "bubble" guys who could change that with a strong senior season.

Both players should be the subjects of relatively heavy recruiting. Not as heavy as Jarvis Moss, Xavier Lawson-Kennedy, Ofa Mohetau, etc., but they'll both receive more than their share of attention.

Also, the "stud from Denton Ryan" that you mention might be defensive end/defensive tackle Derek Lokey, the district 6-4A Defensive Newcomer of the Year in 2002.

Chris Smith of Allen also is being recruited as a tight end -- colleges seem to be split on which side of the ball holds his future. He's been quoted as having at least some preliminary interest in Nebraska, Notre Dame, Purdue, Texas, Texas A&M, Texas Tech, SMU, Wisconsin, TCU and Baylor.

That Smith kid sounds like someone we should go after, especially since we didn't sign a tight end this year (unless Cory Muse plays tight end). We should probably grab a tight end at least every other year, and his ability at tight end and on the defensive line would give some flexibility.

Word around Austin is that the Longhorns have offered Chris Smith. No response yet from him, and I'm not sure if they see him as a DE or a TE.

By the way, the Denton Ryan lineman that "Corso" identified -- Derek Lokey -- goes about 6'3", 250 according to the last report I got.

And, as of yesterday, Lokey has committed to Texas.

SMU is now on Chris Smith's list!

According to one recruiting website (posted March 13), he's listing SMU, along with Oklahoma, Texas, Texas A&M, Florida, Kansas State, LSU and Texas Tech.

I know - it's early. But he's a top-caliber recruit, I gather. Nice to see us on his list.

SMU has offered but he is quoted as saying his favorites are UT, A&M and OU so although SMU has offered it could be tough to get him away from those schools. He is being recruited nationally and already has numerous offers,

Any idea who else already has been offered by SMU?

the only two OFFERS Rivals lists so far are Derek Lokey(Texas Commit) and Chris Smith. SMU is listed as in contention for about 12 players but until the players are ranked its hard for me to get excited because these guys may or may not be top players.
