PerunaPunch wrote:I hate to rain on anybody's parade. But here's a cold dose of reality for you Rivals recruitniks. Thus far, June Jones' first class (with a full year of recruiting) doesn't rank nearly as highly as Phil Bennett's first (true) class.

Bennett had ten 3-star athletes in his '03 class: Boren, Hall, Cleveland, Muse, Phillips, Sturdivant, Jones, Massey, Meeks and McGee compared to the six 3-stars we have in this class.

But to say this is the best class we've had in years -- solely based on rankings -- is wrong. It's not even close... yet.

Stallion should respond to this, but I think he said back in 2003 Rivals had a more liberal ranking system than today, so some 3-stars in 2003 would be 2 stars today.

Regardless, you make a good point. PB's 1st class will probably be ranked higher than JJ's.

Unfortunately, PB lost him momentum as the team kept racking up losses....hopefully that trend will not repeat itself.

The question will be are they the right 3-stars. How many of Phil's actually played and/or stayed their four years?

I knew it was bad, but I didn't realize it was that bad! Are you sure?

Boren-transferred to Tx St
Hall-Ok St
Cleveland-is this the LB Cleveland? left school
Muse-my bad. this makes two
Phillips-hurt his shoulder and exiled to TE land. Recognized during SR day when he was a RS junior. Wasn't there.
Jones-"Football is a privilege, not a right" said PB
Massey-transferred to NW St
Meeks-see Massey
McGee-no idea, but whatever he did or wherever he went, it wasn't SMU

Like I said, it was bad, I just didn't remember that it was that bad. Maybe JJ can choose better players that want to contribute to our football team.

Corey Muse was also a 3 star in that class.

Don't have much time to respond to the other questions but we are years away from having a team that can consistently compete with TCU.

My belief is that to determine when a school should expect to see a quality competitive team at a total rebuild job like SMU you count to 3 or 4 after the first of at least 3 straight strong recruiting classes. Anything less will proportionately affect the team's prospects. But in CUSA you don't have to recruit great to go to a bowl-half the teams in the conference go to bowls.

My own perspective is a little bit different than Scout and Rivals but closer to Rivals. Sometimes they don't give sufficient credit to a program based on total offers received or not received-see the last TCU Class which recruit for recruit was an outstanding collection of mostly highly recruited players but didn't rank as high as it should have(also affected by small class size).

My own perspective is that actual, quality offers is the best barometer of a recruiting class since College Coaches are the best analysts of college level talent. Now if a Recruit commits in February or March he might not get many offers that early. So I discard some Rivals and especially Scout player ratings on overlooked early recruits and over-hyped kids that really never got the offers that were expected. I also think the best recruiters project great athletic talent to the next level-not sign a bunch of high school All-Stars.

I honestly don't follow recruiting in Florida, Carolina, Mississippi or the rest of the CUSA East region to feel that confident in my own opinions on those classes. In Texas I think there is a direct correlation between recruiting success and team success 3-4-5 years down the line.

I do think Rivals does a pretty good job for the casual observer:

Right now we've made strides in the right direction in recruiting-quite frankly with Jones I had hoped we would have made a little bit more. Presently here is what Rivals says-combine all 3 ratings to get the best understanding of the standing of SMU's Class

Present CUSA Rankings

1. Total Points -6th(3rd in West)
2. Average Per Recruit-5th(2nd in West)
3. 3 Star Plus Recruits-(tied for 2nd and 3rd in West).

I also think we lead C-USA in players that are ranked in the top 100 in the country at their position.

And so are most of the teams in the Big 12 and SEC. TCU's a legitimate top 15 team. Our goal is top 25.

You might be giving the Frogs to much credit. They would not survive to well in the SEC.

They aren't in the SEC or Big 12. Recruiting is relative to your competition. TCU's record against BCS teams is pretty damn good justifying the belief that they could compete probably on the level of Texas Tech. I believe they have the best record against the BCS of all non-BCS schools over what 10 years. However, I personally believe if they played week after week in the Big 12 their program would eventually drop back.

McDade had 5 catches for 61 yards and 4 runs for 16 yards in a 38-26 victory over Rival Corsicana. Ennis remains undefeated.

Didn't see this coming as Ennis lost its undefeated season in a 56-31 loss to Waco Midway. McDade had 3 catches for 43 yards and 4 runs for 29 yards. No TDs. Waco Midway is lead by that 5-8 kid John Hubert who has put up some gaudy numbers over the last few years but has been overlooked because of his size. Scored 7 TDs and had 224 yards rushing. I always thought because of his size Hubert might end at an SMU.

Rivals only shows offers from Montana and Louisiana Tech with SMU and others as schools of interest.
