Disappointing call

Postby Pony4Life » Sun Oct 26, 2008 2:59 am

Wasn't too thrilled to see Willis throw the lateral pass across the field after fielding a punt.
That's something you save for a close game, when you need to shock a team and catch up, or ice the game away when nurturing a small lead. Now future opponents know we have it in the playbook.

Now future opponents have to leave one or two coverage men out to the side to make sure a lateral is not thrown to Sanders. That opens up the middle for a better return. Trick plays accomplish 2 things. If successful, a big gain, and whether or not successful it requires the opposition to prepare for the play to be run again. No problem in showing it.

Now our opponents know that they can run the QB up the middle or to the outside and we can never stop it. That cat is outta the bag.

We talked about it at the Fox & Hound, and I thought like Pony4Life - don't show it in a game that might well be out of reach - but you make some good points.

At the time, we were down big; however, we had the wind to our back with plenty of clock in the 3d quarter and JJ simply wanted a quick score and/or to establish good field position for a quick score. I would guess that he was thinking he needed to do something to get the offense moving and regain some sync. while he had the wind. A couple quick scores could have had a considerable impact with plenty of time still on the clock to make things interesting. Biggest problem I had was that we were back into the wind for the 4th quarter with horrendous wind and rain and our prospects of making a game of it at the end were almost totally nil. Hence, the play was probably going to accomplish nothing and wasted a surprise from his bag of tricks.

I think it was in the 4th quarter but I could be wrong. I was pretty disgusted after the last touchdown.

That cat has been out running around in the neighborhood for a long time.

So are we saving the swinging gate for a later game?
