Two more considering Ponies

[Lotus]

David Morgan (6-1, 215, 4.72) of San Antonio (Taft) is a linebacker/running back in high school, and is being recruited at both positions.

Described by one recruiting service as "a tough, smart, hard-nosed player that could play either fullback or linebacker on the next level."

SMU has made his early list, along with Texas A&M, Ole Miss, Texas Tech and TCU. A&M is listed as his early favorite. No offers yet.

And ....

Elroy Steen III (5-10, 216, 4.5) is a relatively small but extremely talented running back from Luling High School. (He also plays linebacker, but is projected as a running back in college.)

He's described as a"strong and powerful runner .... Steen was leading Central Texas in rushing before being injured in district play.

Steen is listing Texas A&M (early favorite), Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, SMU and Baylor. He has not yet received any scholarship offers.

David Morgan is a very strong (benches over 300, squats almost 450), solid player. Most of the people I've talked to project him as a fullback instead of a linebacker at the college level, so with Coach Bennett's move to a more wide-open (usually one-back) set, whether the Ponies end up recruiting a fullback remains to be seen. He's been measured at 27 inches in the vertical leap, so there is some explosiveness to go with the strength..

It shouldn't surprise anyone that OIe Miss is on his list, since both of his parents went there. He's grown up a fan of Texas A&M, although from what I hear, the Aggies might not offer him.

A good student, Morgan reportedly carries a 3.8 GPA and has gone over 1100 on his SAT, so qualifying won't be a problem.

Last year, he had 100 tackles (55 solos, 45 assists) with one fumble recovery, one caused fumble, six sacks, two quarterback pressures, 12 other tackles for losses, one pass deflection and one interception

Plans to go to camps this summer at A&M, Baylor and TCU.

It's on IH-10 between San Antonio and Houston, about 25 miles east of Seguin. Population approximately 4700. PonyTales, when's your birthday?...someone needs to get you a Texas road map.

Steen's father played FB at Texas A&M in the late 1970's-that's probably Bennett's connection. Geez there's been a lot of sons of former Aggies recruited in the last few years. You got Peveto, Steen, Bullit, Krueger among others all whom considered SMU. BTW Tyler Campbell-Earl's son is a recruited player this year although SMU doesn't appear to be a factor.

Tyler Campbell is about half his daddy's size, but boy can he run. Don't know if he's of the same caliber as other RB's they've recruited in recent years, but I bet there's a huge push from within (including from a certain special assistant to the athletic director named Earl Campbell) to somehow come up with an offer for him. Whether or not he ever plays, it would be very surprising to see him land anywhere else.

Sorry - I just realized I forgot to comment the other day on Elroy Steen. He's a smallish-looking back, (I have him listed at 5-9), but he plays bigger than he looks. He's build a little like Barry Sanders - very thick in the legs, giving him a low center of gravity, a lot of power and burst when hitting the line, and the ability to shift speeds and directions extremely quickly. His injury problems last year dropped him off some teams' radar, but a big senior year should push him back up on recruiting lists. He's very talented, and is extremely powerful for a "small" back (although 215 isn't that small, especially for a back of his height.)

He's a better blocker than some expect, and he shows good hands when catching passes out of the backfield. Might return kicks this year.
