Teaching English Abroad

Postby ThadFilms » Tue Oct 28, 2008 6:28 pm

Hey Folks,

SO as I near completion on my current film I am looking at spending some time teaching English abroad. I either want to make my next film and then spend about 9 or ten months in South/Central America or South East Asia... or, finish this one and set out two either of those locales - and returning to Austin to make the next picture.

I'm thinking Thailand, Argentina, Brazil or Costa Rica.

Regardless, anybody on the board ever done this/have any advice? Or know anybody who has done with that would have some good insight for me?

I'm thinking I may split the difference and do my 4 week training in Phuket, Thailand and then heading to, say, Costa Rica... maybe that's too far, but what the heck right? (Or maybe more feasible, if I wanted to do "two in one", do my training in Buenos Aires and then heat to Brazil or CR..... though Thailand and especially Phuket and nearby Kho Phi Phi island are dram destinations - so maybe just doing my training and work over there.) That's all beside the point.... again, anybody have experience?

It goes without saying that should I embark on said quest, any of you can use it as an excuse to visit wherever I end up. I'm an equal opportunity ponyfan welcoming committee.

Better to just travel overseas and teach English to a broad.
I'd kill for a Nobel Peace Prize.

Now there's a cool visitor to have. Also, I'd love to work it out so I don't miss an entire football season, but... all things considered, we've got a couple years before we can possibly be good, so if I am in Costa Rica next year, well, no big loss.

i spent about 10 days surfing in costa rica after I graduated... we stayed in tamarindo the whole time, so I don't know about the rest of the country on a first hand basis. Tamarindo was awesome, if you are into laid back surf towns, cheap beer, and amazing seafood.

Thad,
I did almost exactly what you are thinking of doing. Ended up in South America for 3 years. Taught at the university level as well as teaching for some institutes. I considered going to Mexico and Central America but ended up further south. I met and talked with several teachers who had taught in Europe and Asia/Far East. I can give you a lot of information but PM me with specific questions as I could go on at length about my experiencesl

GO PONIES!!!
