DeMikel ShankleWhat ever happened to him? he isnt listed on the roster on smumustangs.com
According to the participation charts on the SMU website, Johnson played against Texas State, but has not played since. The other 2 have not played at all, not even on special teams.
Let's see, SMU already has more commitments than available scholarships, and is still actively recruiting dozens of players. Perhaps that's what happened to these three guys? Maybe. Just a thought. If they are no longer on the roster, then it doesnt take an abacus to figure out that they are probably gone. Try not to choke on the Kool-Aid.
I'm not a big fan of not renewing LOI's annually but I'd wager that most Top 25 schools make it a standard practice...I've heard that Tech's basketball team under Bobby Knight did it regularly to weed out guys Sir Knight didn't think were either talented enough or if he didn't like them. Just because everyone else does it, doesn't mean we should but it's a sure way to speed up talent. I'm guessing we're going to see a lot of it in the next couple of years in both our football and basketball programs. It will undoubtedly [deleted] some people off but then again, it might be better to let someone transfer than to have people ride the pine for 4 years. Thoughts? We probably need every possible tool to help us if we're going to be competitive nationally in anything besides women's basketball and the country club sports...
I've always supported our players because they are out there working hard to do their best, but the fact of the matter is that a good number of our players probably should have never been given a scholarship in the first place. Not because they are not good kids or don't work hard, but because they are just not D1 level players. The one thing I have noticed every year over the past years is that the players on the other teams are for the most part always much bigger than our players. When we have been competitive in games, it has been because our kids have played over their heads for which I give them much credit, but in the end it has not been enough. Is it fair to run them off? I don't know and I'm sure it is hard for a coach to have to make that decision, but SMU is paying JJ close to $2 million a year to produce a winning football program...not to run a scholarship charity. I know that sounds harsh and I'm not real comfortable in saying it...BUT 20 years of frustration is just too much. We need to get this program turned around now and dragging it out over another five years is just not acceptable any more.
SMU's first president, Robert S. Hyer, selected Harvard Crimson and Yale Blue as SMU's colors to symbolize SMU's high academic standards. We are one of the few Universities to have school colors with real meaning...and we just blow them off.
I am not pointing fingers at any of our players, but most programs have a number of players that don't work hard, develop poor attitudes and no longer have a passion for college football. Certainly we have some of these types whose attitudes get worse when they see little playing time and even fewer wins. It is difficult to adjust to the fact that while in high school things were easy and the accolades never seemed to end, only to find out that there are a number of teamates that are simply better players at the next level. These players weed themselves out.
No reason to feel uncomfortable - If we want to win at DI football, we need to do what is necessary to win. College football is an exchange - they play ball, school gives them free education. If they cannot play good enough ball because of any reason, including lack of talent or lack of physical attributes, they are not holding up their end of the bargain. They can easily transfer to another school or simply become a normal student.
Jordan has been playing with scout team.
La'Cori has also been playing with scouts; he is currently in grad school and probably is just staying on the team as long as he can to get his education. DeMikel is long gone. An incident during summer school (forgot which session, I think 2) got him kicked off.
