Local BIG GUY - hoops

Postby Fresh » Tue Apr 15, 2003 7:39 pm

Are we even trying to land this kid? Or have we tried and simply not had a chance?

LaMarcus Aldridge
Center
Dallas (Seagoville), Texas
6-11, 215

Aldridge averaged 25.7 points , 12 rebounds, and 10 blocks a game for Seagoville. He was 82 percent from the free throw line and 80 percent from the floor.

Reportedly listing Arkansas, Duke, Florida, Miami-FL, North Carolina, Texas

----------------------------------------------------

80 percent from the floor? Are you kidding? Does he shoot anything but dunks?

he's one of the Top 10 players in America so I'm sure we've tried but I've never seen him mention SMU.

Aldridge and Horton (Cedar Hill) will be two of the most highly recruited kids in the nation next year. As far as I know neither have SMU on their radar.
SMU-12 NCAA appearances, 1 Final Four
2014-15 & 2016-17 AAC Men's Basketball Champs

Just heard from a Longhorn friend of mine that Alridge just committed to Texas.

Aldridge did give a verbal commitment to UT today, but he's also keeping the NBA door open. Depending on his percieved draft status a year from now he might opt to go straight to the pros.
With Aldridge, Daniel Gipson, and Dion Dowell, UT already has commitments from 3 of the states top 5 players. If all 3 do wind up in Austin, they'll have another Final Four banner to hang in the Erwin Center.

Post Script:
TCU got a very good early commitment last week as well. Brent Hackett, 2 guard for FW Southwest, is committed to the frogs. For the folks who like the national recruiting lists, Hackett has popped up on a few National Top-100 lists in the 80-90 range. He's a prolific scorer, averaged around 27 a game last year. Puts up alot of 3's, but can get his points from anywhere. Draws alot of fouls when he drives, very good free throw shooter.

"they'll have another Final Four banner to hang in the Erwin Center ...."

Not so fast, my friend! A team full of top recruits doesn't always translate to major success (see Syracuse hoops until this year .... or check out the Texas football program.)

yeah but the two freshman who finally helped win the NC were First Team and Fourth Team Parade All-Americans thereby proving once again that you're not likely to win without Top Recruits.

either one. I wouldn't care if an SMU coach signed zero JC players or 3-4 a year as long as it was left up to the coaches discretion as to which players would benefit the program more.
