I spoke with several parents at the pregame barbecue at the Navy game. You get a vibe from parents which lets you know what they think of a coach. All the ones I talked to love June Jones and his staff. They see him as being a coach and a teacher, not a screamer. He prepares the players for games in a very quiet and business-like fashion. Rather than pulling a player by the helmet and screaming at him, he talks to him and says, here was your mistake, you need to do this instead of that. Ganz is apparently very well liked and respected by the players. The key here is that Jones treats the players with respect and gets respect in return. I got the feeling that the previous administration did not do that. I suspect as time goes on these kids are going to run through walls for this guy. And we have seen improvement. I think all of us expected to see more upperclassmen start and thus have more wins. JJ apparently made the assessment that this was going to be a total rebuild and he would play underclassmen. This slowed initial results to some degree while players like BLM and the OL got their game legs. The team is improving in many ways. I think we'll see one more win this year and I expect us to get better each week. JJ knows he has five years and he is taking a five year approach instead of an instant approach. In the long run his approach will be the more likely to be successful.

I also made it a point to speak with a number of the football parents that I encountered at the hotel, on an Annapolis tour and at the tailgate. All responded to me very positively re JJ and the coaching staff. The kids have high regard for the coaching, teaching, the respect they are receiving from the staff and patience demonstrated as they learn. Freshmen are really bonding and as a group took great exception to the Daily Campus' photo coverage of Beasley dropping the potiential winning TD against Tulsa ostensibly placing the total blame on him for the loss. Every frosh player was incensed at the paper/coverage and as a group took it upon themselves to round up and destroy as many of the papers as they could find as they felt very wronged. EastStang is right on re his comments. This staff is doing a very good job and it is only a matter of time before this program gets turned around.

1. You can terminate a services contract, you just have to pay.
2. Regarding Jone’s contract nearly all coaching contracts have a buy out clause
3. Regarding who pays, SMU or Donors, if the contract is terminated should be in the pledge contract. The donors are savvy businessmen and I doubt that they would allow total control over the money they pledged for a specified coach.

1. Haven't got money's worth yet, no. The reason include a the talent gap versus this year's non-conference schedule, young players in early games (particularly QB), and some miscues and a worn out defense vs. Tulsa & Houston.

2. Yes, I wanted the same turnaround. It fueled my angst early in the season. I don't have expectations; jtstang taught me better than that.

3. Paul Johnson? Not no, but hell no. I like watching balls in the air.

4. No clue about how many wins keeps Jones his job. Not my money. Not my call.
