If they ensured that every Bowl Championship Division conference champion was in the tournament, you could set up a unit system similar to the NCAA tournament. Where each round you play qualifies for a unit. If you do the math by incorporating current bowls into the playoff, there are few bowls left to host other games. Perhaps you might have a dozen or so bowls for left outs, 24 bowls, plus playoff games are way too many. And if a team like Tulsa went on a run and won two playoff games and got into the semi-finals CUSA would reap a huge windfall, same for the MWC, MAC, or SunBelt. You'd have to figure out how to deal with Navy, Army and the other Division 1-A indepe
Nobody is "shut out" any more than they were before the BCS. Nothing is stopping the AP from awarding a NC to Utah or Boise St. if they think that is the best team that year.
From Pat Forde at ESPN... http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/columns/ ... NHeadlines What would an eight-team playoff look like? It's Time For A Change "No less a voice than Barack Obama's called on Monday night for a playoff in college football. To which The Dash says hallelujah, it's time for some pressure on the ossified system from the top down. Top seed and SEC champion Alabama (2) versus eighth-seeded ACC titlist North Carolina (3) in the Sugar Bowl in New Orleans. The backstory would make this interesting, since the Crimson Tide were interested in current Tar Heels coach Butch Davis as far back as 2000, when he was the coach at Miami. That was before Mike Price, before Dennis Franchione and before Mike Shula. Then Bama got it right -- royal-flush right -- with Nick Saban. Second seed and Big Ten champion Penn State (4) versus seventh-seeded Big East winner West Virginia (5) in the Capital One Bowl in Orlando. Just for fun they could award the old Lambert Trophy for the best school in the East to the winner. Third seed and Big 12 champion Texas Tech (6) versus sixth-seeded Pacific-10 champ USC (7) in the Cotton Bowl in Dallas. Would anyone enjoy seeing the Red Raiders' O (first nationally in passing offense, second in total offense, third in scoring) against the Trojans' D (first nationally in pass defense, first in total defense, first in scoring defense)? Fourth seed at-large selection Texas (8) versus fifth seed at-large selection Florida (9) in the Holiday Bowl in San Diego. Colt McCoy and Tim Tebow on the same field might be a little fun. (Dash apologies to Oklahoma and Utah for being the best teams left out. Y'all can console each other in, say, the Alamo Bowl.) After that: semifinals at the Orange and Fiesta Bowls. National title in the Rose Bowl. Championship trophy presented by Dashette Irina Shayk (10). Decide for yourself whether that playoff would generate any interest. After you've thought it over for five seconds, call the president of your favorite university and scream into the phone that you want a playoff. Do not stop screaming until you are out of breath or they have hung up on you -- and then redial and scream again. Maybe it will come to pass by the time Tebow's kids are in college. Or maybe it happens a little faster depending on Tuesday's election results." So how do the Playoffs help everyone else? Apparently the Non-BCS Conferences are still shut out by the very existence of the BCS's new PLAYOFFS! SMU - IT'S YOUR TURN

The first round would not necessarily have to be in bowls...they could be played at the home field of the lower seed...or a neutral field such as a pro stadium. SMU's first president, Robert S. Hyer, selected Harvard Crimson and Yale Blue as SMU's colors to symbolize SMU's high academic standards. We are one of the few Universities to have school colors with real meaning...and we just blow them off.
The TTechs of the world don't want out of the BCSany more than the Baylor of the world do. Say Tech was to leave the Big 12 and join the WAC, and rule the confernce, first the financial hit their athletic deparment would take would be staggering. Secondly, I think it would take TCU about 4 seconds to accept their spot in the Big 12. To put it very simply the BCS is ALL about the $$$. Unless you are Notre Dame with your own television deal, you would have to be an idiot to try and leave it...
College football commander-in-chief?
By Dan Wetzel, Yahoo! Sports Nov 5, 11:07 pm EST Considering that this year Barack Obama defeated two of the great political brands in America – the Clintons and John McCain – won at least 349 electoral votes and, of course, shattered a racial barrier few thought possible, perhaps he doesn’t need any advice. Still, Mr. President, why the heck didn’t you mention your support of a college football playoff sooner? “I think it is about time that we had playoffs in college football,â€
[quote="smupony94"]There were millions of single-issue voters available on this. College football could’ve been a game changer in some of your tougher states.
Consider Alabama. Sen. McCain defeated you 61 percent to 39 percent. All you had to do was get your name on the ballot with a couple of on-purpose typos. Forget “Obama.†It tastes better when served from a Bowl (game)!
