Insiders had a large report on Weatherford, who is from Land O Lakes, Florida, this afternoon but unfortunately our Mustangs are not mentioned. For those of you who might not know Drew is the son of a former S.M.U. quarterback. He currently has offers
from Duke, Tulane, Florida, Tennessee, Louisville, Minnesota and Auburn. His favorite school is Florida State, and he is hearing from them, but they have let him know that they are looking at 5-6 quarterbacks and will let him know before summer where he stands.
Actually, I don't know or have any idea as to whether we are even trying to recruit him but just wanted to pass this along.

Duke? For football? I'd hazard a guess LandOLakes HS could beat Duke. I could understand a basketball recruit choosing Duke over SMU, but there's no reason to go to Duke for football over SMU, unless he just wants to be (a little) closer to home.

A guy would choose Duke over SMU because the are part of a BCS conference...one that might become one of the best football conferences in the country if they do add Miami, Syracuse and Boston College or Virginia Tech. That's something SMU can't offer...an opportunity to compete against the very best. For a kid who has his heart set on Fla St but is not chosen by that school, it's a chance to compete against the Seminoles and prove to them they made a mistake. Same reason a kid might choose Baylor over SMU. Not to mention the fact that if you've ever been to Duke, you'd immediately understand why it's a place you can fall in love with. Absolutely beautiful area (and of course the great hoops tradition doesn't hurt)
That's why SMU needs to start winning...NOW! If we are competing for championships in a mid-major conference, it will definitely help get more of the better 2nd tier players. Look what it's done for TCU.

That's true - Duke is a beautiful campus (although for that part of the country, UNC is much prettier).
Let's say for the sake of argument that SMU starts winning. Not 12-0 or anything but 5 or 6 wins this year, maybe 7-5 in 2004, maybe 8-4 in 2005. Personally, I'd rather be a part of that -- rebuilding a once-proud football program and getting that team back to a bowl (albeit not a BCS bowl) than go to Duke and get topedoed by Florida State, Maryland, Miami, etc., every week, or go to Baylor and get annihilated by Oklahoma, Texas, Texas A&M, Kansas State, Mizzou, Nebraska, Colorado, etc., every week.
Neither Duke nor SMU will go to a BCS bowl in the near future, and probably not in the not-so-near future. At least at SMU, the team has a chance to compete on a weekly basis. And unless you're headed to the NFL, football has to be somewhat fun, and the chance to win even a handful of games would be a hell of a lot more fun than getting your brains beaten in every single week.

Weatherford should be recruited extremely heavily before it's all said and done. So far, he has been offered a scholarship by SMU, Tennessee, Auburn, Florida, Louisville, Minnesota, South Florida and Tulane. And it's expected he'll receive many more, unless he chooses to commit early. Even if he does, don't expect the big schools to back off too much.n
