It's not about Xs and Os. It's about Jimmys and Joes

I talked with 2 former players today during the game and asked what they thought.

Each believes the kids are better coached and the scheme is solid. And they look better organized than at any time under the PB era. They aren't impressed with the tackling.

But they said it's about having players. If you haven't noticed, we don't have very many who are quality DI material, especially on the defensive side. And that's been going on for 2 years.

Were they honest? Have no idea. Just passing it along.

But remember we're weeding our way out of some bad recruiting years and starting to accept kids who are NCAA eligible and we're creating athletic friendly majors. You have to allow that to take hold.

You folks in the instant gratification crowd need to deal!!

And no time under the PB era did we have a great defense. Probably the best D we had was when we went 6-6 a couple years ago when guys like Joe Sturdivant were seniors. Our offense, on the other hand, actually made strides the last couple years under PB.

So, I would say our defense has a much bigger gap to make up vs. other D1 schools than our offense, and that can't happen in a single season.

How they make money is beyond me. Their sandwiches taste like they're made at home with tom thumb deli meat. No special sauce like NY Sub or anything.

NY Sub is awful
It tastes better when served from a Bowl (game)!

Anyway back to football...........We need a serious JUCO infusion. I dont see how this group 1 year older is going to make that much of a difference.

PB seems to have a pretty good defense at Pitt. Maybe he has better "Jimmies and Joes?"

Correct, it is not about x's and o's.

We lack size on the d-line and athleticism at linebacker. We are getting beat at the line of scrimmage, and then our linebackers don't have the agility to run up and make a play - if they are aggressive, they get beat. They have to wait for the back and make a safe tackle, which makes for the consistant 5 yard run.

Unfortunately, frosh linemen don't do much for you, they aren't physically ready for the game. So, we either need solid JUCO DTs or we will have the d-line issue next year as well.
