SMU offers another top Oklahoma WR

Postby Buddha » Thu May 29, 2003 12:48 pm

Damahco Ousley (6-2, 190, 4.45, bench: 280, squat: 450, 3.0 GPA) of Tulsa (Booker T. Washington High School) has received a scholarship offer from SMU. One of the most highly-touted players north of the Red River, Ousley has been described by his head coach as "a very physical receiver. He will also get an opportunity to play cornerback as a senior. Also an outstanding special teams player."

Ousley will be a hard player for SMU to sign, because he already is receiving major attention from some top-tier programs. He and B.T. Washington teammates Michael Tate and Quentin Chaney are three of the best players in the state and likely will have their choice of countless scholarship opportunities. Any of the three would make a significant impact at SMU, and Ousley is a terrific prospect. But again, the Mustang coaches have their work cut out for them fighting off other suitors.

Guru, isnt Quentin Chaney being recruited by alot of schools as a basketball player, as well? Do you know which sport he intends to focus on in college?
Some will tell you that a glass is half empty, and others that the same glass is half full. But all CPC really wants to know is...... does the drink taste good?

I'm not sure if Ousley is planning to attend camp at SMU or not, but I have heard that the SMU coaches are trying to get several BTW players to come to camp at SMU. If that's true, you can be sure that Ousley, Tate and Chaney are on the coaches' wish list, and that they will receive offers, and I assume the coaches will try to sell them as a package deal, so they can continue to play together.

Yes, Chaney wants to play basketball in college, and there are several basketball coaches who are recruiting him. However, all indications are that while he's a very gifted basketball player, he knows his future lies in football. He's not like former Nebraska WR Wilson Thomas - a 6-6 athlete whose football and basketball skills don't equal his physical gifts. Chaney is a terrific football player who should have an offer from almost any school he wants before recruiting is all said and done. (As good as Ousley is, I have Chaney rated higher, and think he has a brighter future - although both should fare well in college.) Chaney will not be hurting for options, and I assume he'll end up somewhere that he's allowed to play both sports. (Although if he signs a football scholarship, he likely wouldn't be allowed to work out or play with the basketball team until the football season is over.) He's also strong enough that playing two sports back to back shouldn't break him down physically.

I'll try to confirm whether they are planning to attend camp at SMU and will post what I learn.
