the problem with MWC expansion to include Boise is that it makes it that much more unlikely any MWC team would go undefeated and (fair or not) that is what it takes to earn a seat at the BCS table. I don't see this happening without a guaranteed BCS bid
The mtn. is in 80% of the satellite community and 20% of the cable community. Verses is 80% of the satellite community and 60% of the cable community. CBS Sports is in 80% of the satellite community and 60% of the cable community.
That's pretty damn good considering every one of your games is on national television. Go Frogs! Pony Up!
MTN network is a huge burden to that conference.
TCU has not benefited. They have absolutely no connection to those schools. At least SMU has some similarity to Tulane/Tulsa/Rice. Of course TCU is inferior academically to these C-USA privates. Not everyone has satellite. Very few cable operators outside of the mountain west have the MTN and their games are not available on ESPN Gameplan either. ESPN is the ticket to national exposure. BSU and Fresno State have benefited from this enormously. BSU would be foolish to leave the WAC. They need to try and schedule some more competitive non conference opponents but its also difficult to get large BCS schools to play them. Why risk getting knocked off by BSU from the "lowly" WAC? Its a moot point for TCU anyways. Patterson probably will be gone after this season.
ponder this-adding Boise St probably puts the MWC above PAC 10 and the the Big East in computer rankings and pretty close to a couple of more. 4 teams in the Top 18 or so .Why do SMU fans always think about backing into success-why not have a goal of building the best conference. The MWC might want to make a statement that they are a BCS level conference-get it. Geez. I think a lot of SMU fans want to be a big fish in a small bowl -that attitude is for losers.
You are making your assumptions based on a single year! MWC for Boise is a net loss for BSU. They are more likely to be a Non-BCS qualifier in the WAC then in the MWC. The East Coast media bias will never rank MWC over Big East! The Pac-10 and Big-10 (11) will recover from this down year as well effectively eliminating the MWC gains of this wirding-way year. SMU just has to start winning and no one will give a second thought to backing into success or conference affiliation. Winning is the cure all! SMU - IT'S YOUR TURN

Boise's too good to stay in the WAC (at least in football). MTN West is a logical move for them. They should then be replaced in the WAC by UTEP, which makes much more sense geographically, and considering their I-10 rivalry with NMSU
I agree with Stallion. Well, to say that the MWC or the WAC are better than the big east of Pac-10 is basing thing off one year so I dont agree with that. However, on the west coast, you have the MWC that has quality teams in Utah (BCS bowl win, best record vs the BCS of non BCS schools), BYU (National title, Heisman Winners), and TCU (7 10 win Seasons in the last 13 years) and then you have the WAC Hawaii(BCS Bowl game), Boise State (BCS bowl win), Fresno State (strong record against BCS teams, number one draft picks).
What should happen for the sake of college football is that instead of having these two conferences in the west, there should be a conference with Utah BYU TCU Boise State Fresno State Hawaii Colorado State (solid program) San Diego State (major TV market/more players in the NFL than most BCS Schools) San Jose State - TV Market Neveda - why not. However, what I think will happen is that the PAC-10 will expand to 12 teams and bring in Utah and BYU. Keeps things consistent in that you have 2 rival schools in Arizona (UA and ASU), Oregon (OU and OSU), Washington (UW and WSU) and then two bay area teams (Stanford and Cal) and two LA Teams (USC and UCLA) then you add in the state of Utah with Utah and BYU. Also, of the other WAC/MWC schools....BYU and Utah have better basketball programs than Boise State, Hawaii, Fresno State, or TCU. And The Salt Lake City TV market aint bad
The Pac 10 is having a down year.
MWC is having a good year. Overall they are far from being the level of the PAC 10 year in and year out. I also do not EVER see a school like Utah or BYU joining the PAC 10. They sure would love to but its not going to happen. How BSU does it year in and year out is remarkable. I support the theory that because their games are seen more on TV that they are able to penetrate traditional PAC 10 recruiting territory in California although I have no data to back that up. La Tech and UTEP need to trade places. The geographical disparity is not good for either conference. UTEP belongs in the WAC no doubt and La Tech needs a southern conference.
BSU's President has been saying publicly for over a year now (before the 2007 season at least) that BSU wanted to join the MWC. In fact, before the 2007 season he actually wrote each MWC school President to ask them to invite BSU to the MWC. He's doing all of this openly and is on record basically begging the MWC to add BSU. All of this is easy to document as it has been published with direct quotes from BSU's President.
The WAC has better exposure thanks to ESPN...but the MWC gets 3x to 4x the TV dollars. The MWC also is trying to position themselves to get a BCS designation, but the next time things are reviewed will be in around 4 years. The Big East was lucky that they didn't lose their BCS designation the last time the BCS reviewed things, as they seriously discussed doing that. Adding BSU would increase the MWC's TV ratings, conference power ranking, and respect. BSU clearly doesn't want to stay in the WAC and they know they can't get the Pac-10, so the MWC is their hope. You would think that the WAC commissioner Karl Benson would tell BSU's President to stop talking about how badly they want to join the MWC, as that really puts down the WAC. However, that apparently hasn't happened. It is also worthwhile to note that the WAC commissioner is in BSU's Hall of Fame...not the most unbiased conference leader!
The MWC has talked about how they want to add a team to make scheduling easier in some sports. However, the biggest incentive for the MWC to add a team is that San Diego State is in serious danger of having to drop out of D-IA within the next 5 years. Their Athletic Department is running a HUGE deficit, their attendance is pitiful, and they may not have a football stadium soon. The Chargers are basically being kicked out of Qualcomm Stadium and the city has already made plans to tear down the stadium and use its prime land for development. If SDSU has no stadium...they are done with football.
By the way, Stephen Tsai of the Honolulu Advertiser (the lead reporter covering Hawaii football) said that he thinks that the MWC will invite SMU to join in a few years. He thinks that SMU brings more to the table for TV than BSU...
I believe it is... It tastes better when served from a Bowl (game)!
