sunshine report

Postby Charleston Pony » Sun Nov 16, 2008 8:34 am

not much "positive" to pull from last night's game.

program has probably reached an all-time low with what is looking like back to back 1-11 seasons, winless in CUSA

Somehow I remain positive that JJ will get this thing turned around. Bring in more playmakers and help on defense. He's building an OL that will be very competitive a couple years from now.

Anyone notice the defense held UTEP to only 4-14 3rd down conversions? and that UTEP was 0-3 on 4th down attempts? How about Taylor Thompson's 8 tackles, with 2 resulting in losses? Guys like Thompson & Banjo will taste success before they leave SMU.

I still believe. After 20 years of SMU athletics misery (and raising 2 children) I have learned patience

I still have 1 game plus three years as a SMU Football PonyDad!

My fear is that I am permanently and perpetually bound as a PonyFan!

Someone please tell me it is all just a dream...

the positive was we made them kick 5-6 FGs and held them on other 3rd and 4th downs-otherwise they could have scored 60-70 maybe 80. UTEP was only 4 of 17 on 3rd and 4th down conversions. Banjo knocked down two passes in the endzone and we did get some pressure on the QB. The offense was a vast barren wasteland. And the stat many don't notice-Morestead had a puny yards per punt of 37 yards on 5 punts but 4 punts were kicked inside the 20 and another one went for 50+ yards. Punting average stats are for losers. Morestead is the real deal-the best punter this school has ever had.

Unfortunately Morestead's punting stastics will not be all that impressive this year; however, his effectiveness has been truly outstanding and represent the few glimmers of positive performance this season. His only mistakes this season were in the Navy game when he attempted his first 3 punts into the gale force wind using a traditional high trajectory/hang time technique which could only fail. I only hope the pros give him a look and that will depend largely on hiring the right agent as the most most talented kickers do not always land roster spots in the NFL.

I know I am going to be shunned for this but Morstead has not had a great season. I have watched every game, seen him miss several makeable field goals, and more than a fair share of end over end punts. He has not had a great year in my opinion, but should make a NFL roster after a tryout. Arizone needs a punter.

Morestead has 19 kicks inside the 20 this year in 11 games. Who cares if he doesn't pad his average by punting it into the endzone.
