Offensive linemen

There's always talk of the need for more (big) offensive linemen. I found a list with some highly-regarded OLs, some of whom we might have a shot at. I've eliminated (I think) everyone who has committed somewhere. I've also eliminated guys who all reports suggest are completely out of reach. (Feel free to post a response if anyone here is committed somewhere.) Again, it's speculation at this point - just some names to keep an eye on.

Based on the numbers you present:

Middleton sounds very appealing.

Cheatham, from what I've read, is out of reach.

Richmond Lewis sounds slow, as does Caleb Morris.

I've seen Leroy Pierson - what a load. Very strong.

All other reports on Brandon Strange have him at 260, not 280.

Is Cody Reen the same guy as Cody Reno? He's supposed to be extremely good.

Kellen Green is slow. But at 6-7, 265, maybe Coach Faucette could get him thicker and faster? Maybe a project worth taking on.

I thought I read that Fred Walker's already committed somewhere. Not true?

I hear Doug Smith is out of reach, too.

Getting big guys is nice, but if they can't move, I doubt Coach Bennett will want them. He's always stressed quickness over sheer bulk.

Here's one I think we'd like:
Jeramie Craig of Carrollton High School (R.L. Turner). Class of 2004.
He is a two-way player over there: tight end and defensive end

Jeramie is 6'3" 220 lbs., 4.9, and has already scored 1150 on the SAT and has a 3.7 High School GPA.

Please don't take this the wrong way.. but. The RL Turner guy is a Linebacker that needs to get faster. My thought only. Good height not real big nor fast.

I don't know -- at that speed, I'd say bulk him up to play DE in college. I don't know how much speed he could add. But when you look at the size we've put on some DEs -- Melvin Williams has added 40 pounds since he arrived, Justin Rogers has added 20 -- maybe Coach Faucette could do the same with this guy.

There are several good linemen on that list, and some that SMU has a legitimate shot at.

Tyler Ribitzki, 6-5, 290, 5.2, Burleson - big frame, good strength, and he has some interest in SMU.

John Walden, 6-3, 310, 5.3, Arlington Bowie - one of the top center/guard prospects in the state. Could be a longshot for Ponies (SMU isn't on his recent list of schools).

Brandon Strange, 6-4, 280, 5.2, Rockwall - likely to slide by some of the big programs. Some coaches are concerned that he might be as big as he's going to get. Also can play DT. Plays guard and tackle in HS, likely to play guard in college.

Cody Reno, 6-5, 300, 5.2, Tomball - I've seen him listed as big as 310 (and in one case, 315). Small-town guy with huge potential. Lots of "raw" strength who should only get bigger and stronger under supervised strength/conditioning program. Could be a star in college.

Nathan Miller, 6-3, 270, 5.2, Alvin - Very good footwork. Needs to add strength, in his upper body and in his legs. Projects as a guard in college.

Kellen Green, 6-7, 265, 5.6, Laredo Alexander - PonyTales is right, Green might be slow enough at the moment that other schools back off, or at least drop him on their priority list. At 6-7, he looks almost thin. With proper conditioning, he easily can add 40 pounds or more, and might well improve his quickness. He has very long arms that he uses well to keep defensive linemen at bay. Compensates for lack of footspeed and weight with exceptional balance and leverage. Could be a sleeper who really blossoms. Projects as a right tackle; could move to the left side with improved quickness.

Fred Walker, 6-4, 310, 5.4, Gilmer - Big, thick East Texas kid (hello, Jerry Bennett) who plays [deleted] every play and has a mean streak a mile wide. Likes to plant defensive linemen, rather than merely block them. Punishing run blocker; needs to polish pass-blocking technique. But might be the most college-ready player on this list.

Caleb Morris and Doug Smith are studs. I don't know if they have any interest in SMU, though. Smith, in particular, should be a monster in college.
