Yea, he was 10 deep 7 minutes in

Yeah, I mentioned this in an earlier post, but he played 10 guys in the first 8 minutes. We have to establish some kind of continuity between our guys, and quick substitutions does not allow for that.

I've seen alot of big name coaches sub 5 players @ a time early in the season. Yes, the substitution pattern was confusing tonight.
Yes, more scoring droughts. But its just the 1st game of a long season.
I'll keep reminding myself that its a marathon & not a sprint.
My initial reaction is that Bamba & Papa need to step it up.

I agree that early in the season you will see alot of guys get action. But as I said in my earlier post, I hope after five games that we have a rotation of 8 guys. It's hard to get into any rhythm when you are constantly being rotated in and out of the game. I'm not giving up after game one, but I do want to see us establish our top 8 guys and let them play the majority of the minutes in every game. I am still surprised that our two new guards took about half of our shots. I thought dia, malone, and fall would have taken more control of our offense. But like you said, this is a marathon and not a sprint. Let's hope for great improvement in our next game.

the five at a time substitutions Doh learned from Dean Smith.
Upon opening up this thread, I don't have much to say other than wait a second, so we still suck?

Did I hear that we shot less than 30% for the game................ouch!!! Does Orsini really think we are going to be top 25 in either football or basketball? So far, neither of his two major coaching hires have improved the product on the field/court since they got here.

Sounds like last year
Might be worse this year.
OK Everybody...Tap the brakes a little. Looks like the SMU Football doom and gloom has floated its way over to the bball board.
First game on the road with three of the five starters new to the line-up and the team. Serious mintues played by 5 players who have never stepped onto the floor as a Mustang (three true freshmen). One of those five is a redshirt and the other played JC.
I'm encouraged by Williams' and McCoy's ability to get to the hole and to handle the ball. Also liked seeing Nyakundi not only shooting, but being active on the defensive end. Sounds like Haynes is raw. I was a Devon Pearson fan. I'm hoping Otis becomes our brass knuckles under the hoop. Good to hear Harp is still all over the floor. I hope he starts shooting more. Confidence gained on the defensive end with create confidence in your offensive game.
People...We had only two tricked up scrimmages before this. We now have good video to watch and an entire week to fix and change. We needed to play bodies and figure out our rotation. We will not see 10 players touching the floor next week.
I found it interesting that TK didn't sniff the floor and Papa didn't start. Nice to see our new guys were held in a higher regard compared to our second year players. Shows we have some competition on the practice courts and that Coach Doh is upgrading.
We are in good shape. We should turn out better than last year. It's one game. Chill out.

SO, let me get this straight....
We had a ton of players playing their first colelge game, have a very young team, played our first game on the road at a big east team (granted a poor one), started two frosh and a new JC, only shot 29% from the field and didn't get blown out?
I think we need to chill out a little with the sky is falling stuff. Let's see what our athleticism looks like at the classic before we judge these guys. I see three guys who were starting last year on the bench, which right there tells me we are going to be a better team.

disappointing to see the low shooting % and even moreso, the 7 assists to 16 turnovers. That's where we need to improve and hopefully McCoy & Williams will be difference makers as the season wears on and these guys grow more accustomed to each other.
as for the immediate doom & gloom, at least we can say this loss was against a Big East team on the road. As for USF possibly being a last place team in the Big East...well, aren't we supposed to finish near last in CUSA? Nothing wrong with scheduling teams from the Big East, Big XII and Big 10 who are in the same "relative" position as SMU
Hopefully we can regroup and win some of next weekend's games. The new guards took the majority of shots. For those who watched, does it look like these guys can create their own shots? We haven't had many players around here who have been able to do that, and if they can, should help in the assist category as the year progresses.

Not to spoil this little sunshine fest, but we also held them to under 60. If we can figure out how to score, this is encouraging that we played some defense. If you play good defense game in and game out, then you will win some games because your offense can't be that bad every game.

Bring the sunshine on EastStang! Lord knows we need it. Our talent is getting better each year. McCoy and Dia should be examples of the type of talent we can now expect. Those players should fill some deficiencies: toughness, speed, handles (hope Harp and Robert can fill the "make the open 3 ball" hole). Let's get some seasoning and figure out our rotations. We won't be world beaters, but we will prove to be better this year. I never really thought we would have a team worth talking about until next year anyway. Anything we do this year is a building block. I would like to see an athletic 2 guard on the horizon. SMU needs a slasher type player who can create his own shot. That kind of player draws defenses and creates open shots and open lanes. Haven't seen Haynes play yet, but my intial impressions are raw. Hope he improves and get a feel for the D1 speed.

Of course my sunshine theory that you can't shoot that bad every game could be proven wrong.

Yeah! You pulled stats from one game! Here is a gold star!
XtC, you are smarter than that. You know these guys had offers more attractive than ours. Louisville, Kentucky, and OU are great teams to have recruiting battles with. Heck of a lot better than UNT and Texas State.
I'm talking pure talent, not one game. Some guy once had one rebound and one assist with 8 points. His name was Michael Jordan. Not comparing any player we have to him, just making a point.
