Texas Football Recruiting RankingsI thought Texas Football did a pretty good job ranking the recruiting classes although they still had us closely behind TCU(again for at least the 14th out of 15 years-maybe 15)-in the SMU section they noted that some rankings had us as the Top non-BCS recruiting class. Probably referring to Rivals but I think some changes since signing date make that no longer true. Anyway they rated the class as follows: 1)A&M-11, 2) UT 10.9, 3)Texas Tech 2.31, 4)TCU-1.84, 5) SMU 1.76 6) Houston 1.21, 7)Baylor 1.02,

Re: Texas Football Recruiting RankingsI have a question about the Dave Campbell rankings. I've not seen this year's magazine, but I recall that there was a flaw in their system. Mainly, they don't rank out of state prospects unless they make a Top 100 national list either HS or JUCO. So the primary ranking comes from Texas players who appear on newspaper lists.
This would exclude Muse, McGee and Sturdivant from the SMU ranking. All three were ranked in the top 70 or better at their position by rivals, but none made the national top 100 -- I don't think. TCU might have a few as well. Is this still the case with Texas Football? And if so, does that explain the ranking difference. "Once the number 3, being the third number, be reached, then lobbest thou thy Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch towards thy foe, who being naughty in my sight, shall snuff it."

Re: Texas Football Recruiting RankingsI'm just amazed Baylor Dave didn't list BU's class as the #1 class in the nation.
Re: Texas Football Recruiting RankingsYeah, but Dave just lends his name to the annual bathroom reader. He thinks Grant Teaff is still the coach.
Re: Texas Football Recruiting Rankingswhat is with you people about Dave Campbell. I've read his magazine for 40 years and I don't see this bias you'll talk about. First of all he hasn't been the actual editor for years. The guy was a sports writer for the Waco newspaper so yes he has a great knowledge about Baylor football. Big Deal. At least he wrote about college football which is more than I can say about the Big City newspapers. How has he ever slighted SMU? I'm delighted every year that he hasn't reduced the coverage of the non-BCS schools WHICH JUST ABOUT EVERY OTHER MEDIA SOURCE HAS. He gives the private school equal coverage of the big schools which is some of the best coverage we get in the media. There simply is no other media source that has such extensive coverage of SMU other than the SMU media guide. Are you pissed because his magazine has rarely rated our teams and recruiting classes high? What fool would? Nobody else has either.

Re: Texas Football Recruiting RankingsI can't speak for Bergermeister, of course, but my objection to Baylor Dave is his complete lack of objectivity - he always pumps up BU's prospects waaaaaaaaay above what any other media member (or coach) will say. I haven't seen this year's mag (gotta wait for someone else to buy it and leave it around the office), but more often than not, he'll imply that BU is right on the heels of Texas and A&M in the state, in terms of on-field talent, season expectations and recruiting. Texas Tech is lightyears ahead of BU. So is TCU. And in my opinion, SMU is, too. Whether we win or lose this year's game in Waco, SMU has a lot more to offer, and clearly is improving. As a recruiting nut, Stallion, surely you realize that Coach Bennett has been able to sell what SMU has to offer to a very high caliber of players. Not national 5-star guys, but miles ahead of the level at which SMU used to recruit. But to read Baylor Dave's magazine, you'd think the Bears were competing with the Longhorns and Aggies and Miami and Notre Dame for recruits, and that they'll break out of their skid of 1-10 and 1-11 seasons to really push for the Big East South title. Come on. I'm not saying he should write "Baylor is going to be terrible .... again." But his mag would have a lot more legitimacy if he'd sprinkle in an occasional dose of reality.
Re: Texas Football Recruiting Rankingshe doesn't even do the recruiting articles-David Barron has for years-Randy Rodgers a former UT Recruiting Coordinator provides commentary. They rate SMU's class well above Baylor's class. As for past years you would be hard pressed to find ANY recruiting source that would rank even 2-3 SMU recruiting classes above a Baylor recruiting class in the last 15 years. Who's not being fair-remember SMU has only won something less than 20% of its games against former SWC foes in the last 15 years. Baylor and Tech have never lost to SMU, we've beaten UH what one time, and even TCU and Rice have dominated SMU. Now whose not being fair?

Re: Texas Football Recruiting Rankingsagreed stallion. i always thought if there was a bias on his part, it slanted toward UT. dave has always done as good a job as anyone of covering us objectively.
Re: Texas Football Recruiting RankingsHuh? He does?
Sorry, I'm with Grapevine and Bergermeister on this one. His college coverage is terrible. His high school coverage is terrific, but he should limit himself to that. This year, he has Rick Alonzo writing the SMU story, so that should be a vast improvement over his regular staff's attempts at covering the Ponies.
Re: Texas Football Recruiting Rankingsyeah right his college coverage is horrible-name one magazine that is half as good. Some of you wouldn't know objective reporting if it bit you in the butt. Now which bowl game we going to fellas?

Re: Texas Football Recruiting Rankingsguys i am terribly confused. have you read the smu section even? what other positive slant could he have taken? he aint here to blow smoke boys.
Re: Texas Football Recruiting RankingsHe is if you read his Baylor coverage.
I haven't read the magazine this year yet, but I hear Rick Alonzo wrote the SMU preview, which means it will be vastly improved. And who said anything about going to a bowl game?
Re: Texas Football Recruiting RankingsRe: the bowl game. Stallion forgot to take his sarcasm pill. Stay here long enough and you'll understand.
