So students will turn out in large numbers if SMU is playing top 50 programs?

of course. get teams like Davidson Gonzaga...or other midmajor top programs...

How about, show up to see an SMU team play a game to which we should win. I don't care who it is!! When was the last time you saw SMU win a game?

Disregarding the win over Texas State in football, I think the last SMU win I saw was the thriller last year against UTEP where Jkillen went off in the second half/OT's. All I want is to see us consistently compete and have a chance to win the game. For far too long (3 years) I have seen us compete and completely fizzle out at the end of games (football and b-ball). I want to see us put an opponent away and celebrate nerve free for the final X minutes of the game. Hopefully, we can establish that precedent this weekend.

We're in chicken and egg territory. There are high school seniors making their college selection now. In previous years those who cared about a school with an exciting athletic program didn't see a lot to offer in SMU. I hope that's beginning to change.

Better teams will attract students who care about the college athletic experience, more students who care will increase enthusiasm, more enthusiam will make it easier to recruit, and the virtuous cycle will continue.

I'm old school, so I remember when the lower bowl at Moody was always packed, especially for SWC games. It was just something you did, like hitting Greenville Ave. on Thursday night, and it made Moody a very unwelcoming place for the visiting team.

1. Why would those teams play at SMU when they can receive bigger paydays and more exposure by playing top 25 schools?
2. In their present state, those teams would beat SMU solidly (regardless of location). Is that what you want to see?

Every ACC arena fills up for every game even the games against the Blind Little Sisters of the Poor. Georgetown has a little bit of trouble filling up the Verizon Center for these body bag games, so it plays those game on Campus and plays its BE games at the Verizon Center. Navy doesn't draw huge crowds at home when school is out as witnessed a few years ago when SMU played in front of a whopping 800 people. Duke has had great crowds even pre-coach K and most teams hated to play there because of the home court advantage for Duke. SMU needs to have a home court advantage. In my view there is no excuse for missing home games except possibly a final exam the next morning if you are a student.

Forget what the reported attendance is, when was the last time Moody had 800 people and either Memphis or Texas Tech weren't playing?

I'll admit that the upperclassman and experienced players were disappointing in the opener but its too early to tell what this team will become. I'm more interested to see how this team looks in December.

Agreed, agreed, agreed...Wait until we get going before you (jkflamebo) start making these sweeping, generalized opinions from one game...
