OK, Doh needs to box & 1 Champ Oguchi or try to slow him up w/some sort of gimmick. Kid is dominating.
“When I first committed to SMU, I thought it would take a couple of years of building. But with these players coming in, we should make a run. We have a lot of heavy hitters. It could get real ugly for a lot of teams we play.â€- Jalen Jones
something in the range of 60 or 70% would be a ton better
great game by McCoy. Great shooting by Walker, gotta give it to him. ISU is a good team, but Papa's play is starting to be a concern. He got abused on the boards by them, almost embarrassing for him. I was encouraged by how he looked on friday night but tonight we seriously looked like a one man show and would have gotten blown out without McCoy. we'll see what papa is about in Fort Worth on wednesday. need a big game by him against frog.
All great observations. When we had cut the lead to 7 with 9 minutes to go, Papa got abused on the boards 3 times in a row and gave up 2nd looks and the Red Birds stretched the lead back out. Not sure why Bamba sat so much in the second half, could have used him in that stretch. All those shots Papa made on Friday night have not fallen since. Otis looks good and brings good energy and he has nice offensive moves and takes it to the hoop aggressively and draws lots of fouls, unfortunately, his free throws are not even close, with most clanking off the backboard first. Needs to really work on that. Nothing else to say about McCoy, he is fantastic....Williams was too, but he seems to easily get in Doh's dog house and gets yanked or gets scared to shoot when Coach starts the yelling. Coach D needs to chill and let him play. Both Williams and McCoy seem to have the ability to take it hoop at will. Walker had another great shooting night, looks like we have our spot up three shooter in him. Not much to say about anyone else and Doherty is really frustrating me with his substitions, I know he likes getting everyone a lot of playing time, but in games against tougher competition, we need our best players out there most of the time. Not a bad game, not much you can do when a team shoots 3s like that, it was their night. Womack + Wishbone = Heisman
Class of 89
I agree with most everything you said, but statements like this are baffling to me. Sure, we would have been blown out without McCoy, but ISU would have lost without Oguchi. It's sort of like the annoying bench scoring stat when Team A and Team B are playing a close game (or sometimes even when Team A is winning), announcer will point out how Team B's bench scoring is so much better than Team A. But, um, doesn't that mean that Team A's starters are by far outscoring Team B's starters? Who cares where the scoring is coming from -- starters or bench, it all adds up the same.
my point is more nuanced than that. Oguchi is a returning player for his team and obviously a team leader who is expected to be consistent. McCoy, as much as i like what i see, is a true freshman (no prep school) and shouldn't be expected to be the man. McCoy had a near perfect 23 point effort and we still were never really in the game in the second half and down by as much as 17. Papa, Bamba, Malone, Harp, Nyakundi all laid a serious egg and it is concerning that so many returning players who played a lot last year were the ones that played like freshmen.
