After Tournament Thoughts

Postby stobor » Sun Nov 23, 2008 11:19 pm

I'm pretty happy with our showing this weekend. A few thoughts from listening to the games:

The Good
McCoy - Just a flat out stud. Doherty really flexed his recruiting muscles on this one. Can't wait to see how he turns out.
D.Williams - Really excited about him as well. His shooting % is a bit low, but everything else looks great. Again, nice pick-up by Doherty.
M. Walker - Best surprise of the weekend. Where did he come from in the Illinois St game? I have to say that I was completely baffled last year with what Doherty saw in him on his Dia recruiting trips. The General should be happy about this one.

The Bad
Dia - So streaky. I'm not sure what the problem is here. I'd hate to see his talent go to waste with a weak work ethic (which I am assuming based on comments by Doherty and on the board is the issue).
Fall - He's killing us on offense. His points (around 9 a game on average) are fine, but he needs to shoot less or raise his FG%. Sub 40% on the season.
Free Throws - We turned it around a little bit in the last game (minus Otis...maybe he needs lessons from Shaq), but over all we're still pretty bad. This is going to be crucial in conference play.

The Unknown
Harp - I can't get a read on his progression. He's not lighting anything up statistically and he's receiving mixed reviews here. Maybe someone can help me out on this one.
Nyakundi/Haynes - They're not getting enough PT to really get a read. Can anyone who went to the games shed anymore light on these two?

I think if Dia and Fall can get things together we could end up a couple games over .500 on the season. That would be nice.

After the three games I left pretty encouraged about this team. Doh has some good young talent.

I'm pretty encouraged with the future of the team. Our three point line defense is horrible, teams have open three's all day. I also wish Doherty would tighten up the player rotation so we could gain some rhythm.

With Dia, I'm getting the feeling this is how his career is going to go. He's going to be really good for one game, disappear in the next and leave everybody scratching their heads.

The only rationale I have is because he's fairly new to the game that he doesn't have the savvy to play it night in and night out. That affects his work ethic.

Papa has 2 choices = He either wants to work diligently on his game and blossom or he can continue to go down this path. In the natural progression of things, this shouldn't be happening.

Just my opinion.

That appears to be the pattern. There's no doubt he has the talent....hopefully Doherty can figure out how to push the right buttons and get him to show up most nights, but that remains to be seen.

Ye is still a young player who doesn't have a lot of experience. I don't think we should expect consistancy out of a player like that until he is an upperclassmen, but that is just my opinion.
