SMU now in on top Dallas DE

Postby DallasDiehard » Tue Jul 22, 2003 11:25 am

Rivals says SMU has entered the race for Dallas (W.T. White HS) defensive end Micah Howeth (6-2, 236), who many consider one of the top DEs in the Metroplex. Rivals lists him at 5.22 in the 40, but I've seen WTW play, and he's a lot faster than that. Maybe that's a typo - I don't know, but I'm going to see if I can find another time for him. This kid is really quick, and I've heard he might play a pass-rushing outside linebacker spot in college.

Ponies face an uphill battle, as he's listing Iowa State, Kansas State, Ohio State, Oklahoma, SMU.

That's more like it - just found another report that has him running "under a 4.8."

Having seen several W.T.White games last year, I can assure you that Diehard is right when he says Howeth is faster than that 5.22. He's a little undersized if you project him as a college DE, but he's going to get bigger, I'd assume. What doesn't show up in those stats is that he's extremely strong for his size. I saw a game last year when he was lined up against an OT who must have been in the 290-300 range, and not only was he able to run around the guy all day (big boy wasn't too quick on his feet), but he also bull-rushed the big fella a couple times and planted him on his back. Part of that is the element of surprise, and he was able to knock the big guy off-balance. But this guy is a lot stronger than he looks. If he doesn't get big enough to play DE in college, he'd make a nasty LB - either outside, rushing the passer, or even in the middle, where he could roam sideline-to-sideline.

I don't know anything about the kid, being so far away, but if he's getting chased by Ohio State and Oklahoma and K-State, he must be a real stud.

It's hard to say when he plays on a team that gets smoked every week, and being the only really good player WTWhite has, he's the focus of every opponent's blocking scheme. But even with that attention, he's still the best player on the field every week. How that translates to college is anybody's guess, but he sure seems to be drawing attention from the big programs.

You can't have too many pass rushers. If he's as good as you guys say, I hope the coaches can get him.
