Decatur running back selects SMU
07/25/2003

From Staff Reports

Decatur running back Andrew McKinney has made an oral commitment to SMU. McKinney, a 6-4, 230-pound senior, said he's not sure if he will play running back in college but said if he reaches his predicted height of 6-7, he might convert to tight end. Oral commitments are nonbinding. McKinney cannot sign a letter of intent until February 2004.

He might move to tight end? How many are we collecting?
Anyone have some stats on this guy?

I agree - and 4.5 is really fast for a big guy.

OCSN reports he also has drawn interest from Texas Tech and Oklahoma State.

Those that know - too tall for a fullback? - how'd you like to have this guy clearing out the lane for you?

he also could be used according to the Rivals story as a FB-a big strong FB is something we don't have around here. It might add a lot to our running game to add a 6-6, 283 Darrin Johnson and 6-4, 248 FB at the essential point of attack on running plays. The story also shows he was pretty productive as a junior leading Decatur to a 12-1 record and had 1270 yards and 26 TDs. He'll also help to the team GPA with a 3.7 GPA and 24 ACT.

the DMN lists his stats as 1267 yards rushing on 193 carries for 6.56 ypc and an added bonus is that he is VERY productive out of the backfield with 27 catches for 375 yards and 13.89 per catch which is outstanding. almost 1650 yards in total offense.

PonyFans,

Great job on identifying this new recruit. We'll get on the phone and track him down for an interview and photos.

Anyone else see a trend here?

Ryan Kennedy is a big, beefy TE.

Darrin Johnson is even bigger, and he's moving to TE.

All four OLs who signed this year (Boren, Burley, Peveto and Turner) are all bigger than the guys we've signed in years past.

Now we've gotten Vincent Chase - another big TE who's only going to get bigger.

And now adding a FB who's 6-4, 230 and projected to grow a lot more? Hmmm .... even with Bartel running the show, think Coach Bennett wants to blow people off the line and run the ball? I sure do....

Kinda reminds me of the size of Kansas State. They sure had some big boys out on the field last year.

I hear that he could be a fullback, tight end, defensive end, outside linebacker or if he got big enough interior defensive lineman. I hear he is a great athlete that can really run. Rivals says 4.5 but I heard really about 4.6 but that is fast. OU has been on him hard as has OSU and Tech. TCU tried to get in on him but he told them "thanks but no thanks". This could be a real find for the good guys. Way to go Coach Roark!

The QBs, RBs and WRs get headlines on offense, but it's the OL, the TEs and FBs who make it possible for the little guys to get the ball upfield. And that's exactly where Coach Bennett seems to be loading up.

The other thing to remember is that we are not dishing out offers without really, really wanting the guy since we have so few scholarships to give, so this must be a real good player.
