they often say they get a medical redshirt year as a freshman but I'm pretty sure that is in fact not accurate
I don't think you can actually seek a hardship medical redshirt until the semester prior to your 5th year. But it must be supported by medical evidence from the injury year.
That used to be the case, but it appears the rule has changed. Before the season started, a sophomore basketball player at San Diego State was granted a hardship year, and is a freshman again. He started the first 4 games in 2007, but then had knee surgery and was out for the year. He petitioned for and was granted the hardship waiver, and he has 4 years left. I know that as recently as 3 years ago, the rule was you had to wait until after your senior year, but apparently that is no longer the case.

You mean the NCAA is finally making a rule that makes sense. Obviously the new rule provides coaches with the ability to plan for how many scholarships are available from year to year.

There is more to the Enright story. He started as a F and So and now he is playing behind McJunkin, a F. The only time that he played late in the season was against Memphis, and that probably cost him a medical red shirt.

He was a Reminton Award candidate at the start of the season and now he is playing behind a fresman. This makes no sense.

He broke his finger, and word is they were hoping to get a medical hardship. They dressed him for the Memphis game which probably by itself blew the hardship, but he was then forced into action when McJunkin started snapping over BLM's head several times. Jones has said in interviews that the finger is still not fully healed. I think it will be a competitive position next year.
