Bamba - Why?

Postby Tipoff96 » Sat Nov 29, 2008 6:08 pm

I was at Moody last night for the women's game and I noticed the usual, big wall pictures on the entrance wall. What's with SMU MBB promoting Bamba and only Bamba? I've watched the team sparingly during his career and I'm not seeing his talent as dominant, top-notched or conference-leading. Sasser or Q - I get it. But Bamba on everything? Am I the only one that thinks this is odd?

Yep,

the posters, pictures, schedule cards, etc....have always featured only the seniors, so by tradition he is the only one featured, since he is the only senior.

I have no problem with it since that is the way they have always done it.

That's a Carolina thing taken from Doh's Dean Smith days.

We also did it long before Coach Doherty got to Dallas.

That's not a god enough reason. Tradition is no longer a viable fallback if we expect to turn things around. We have a history of losing, so falling back to what got us there doesn't make sense.

Honoring seniors does though, who really cares if Bamba is the only one on the poster or schedule? Everyone will eventually get their turn, when you are a senior, you too can get a poster with you on it to hang in the dorm and family room.

It's also because we have rarely had one or two standout players worthy of being the face of the program before their senior year. BHop cracked the posters and media guide before his senior year -- pretty sure this was the case when Lowe and Atkins were the only seniors. In previous years the seniors happened to be the most deserving of the coverage (BHop -- Simpson, Castro, etc. -- Q Ross -- Hanc0ck -- Sasser & Davis).

Doh of course got all the attention instead of the players when he first arrived.

This season the only players deserving of more attention are the new guys, so really no better choice than Bamba.

The seniors have not always been at the center of our marketing campaigns. Jon Koncak was featured his junior season, Jeryl Sasser his junior season, Bryan Hopkins his sophmore and junior season, Derrick Roberts and Devon Pearson as juniors, etc. I think that in general going with the seniors is a good way to go, but we have appropriately promoted deserving stars such as Sasser, Koncak and Hopkins. If McCoy can sustain his current play he should be featured next year.

Not to say this isn't a legitimate discussion, but I'm pretty sure that whose picture they choose to feature out in the hallway is not going to have much bearing on our team's quality of play, one way or the other.

Bamba has the size and talent to be pretty good.

Bamba also has the heart of a kind old man that just wants to get along with everyone.

I know him and talk to him and he is a good person, kind person.... not the qualities one needs to play NCAA basketball.

He needs to get a MEAN streak in him or be played only when upset.
