Greyshirt question

Postby George S. Patton » Thu Dec 04, 2008 11:44 am

How many and who do we have in the pipeline? I ask only because I've heard the commitment totals of 22 and 25.

The only one I know is Humble LB Robert Parker.

Thanks in advance.

P.S. With these commitments, are we pretty much full with the 19 on the list or do we anticipate more because of Jones potentially ushering people out of here?

we are still offering or considering a lot more recruits. As far as additional grayshirts, I know we have the LB Zach Line kid from Michigan and the Offensive Lineman Josh Emshoff from Houston who are grayshirts. I expect SMU to sign a full Class of 25 plus a few more grayshirts for next year. I wouldn't be surprised if SMU took 4-5-6 more recruits.

I have a feeling that Coach Jones knows how to "massage" the totals in a way that we will get anyone that he wants who is willing to come here, regardless of the totals that are being thrown around. The biggest issue will probably be the 85 number more so than the 25 number, which will mean adios to some who may not know it yet.

Pre-Analysis-Caveat: I am dealing w/ incomplete information. A lot of you guys know more than I do about specifics. I am counting on that to help sort this out. And none of us know the coaches' calculus with this issue vis-a-vis who they want to retain and who they do not.

That said, I pulled the currently published roster into Excel-Pivot, removed known SR-3Ls+, advanced everybody left 1 year in classification, and tried to remove clear walk-ons (an inexact science for this exercise). I did not factor in the 19 current rivals recruits, nor anybody else that has been discussed here as a recruit.

Of what's left (scholies?), I show 74, with future JRs (redshirt, greyshirt, transfer, or otherwise) being largest individual class w/ 24 players.

Now, here is the main gray area for me...identifying walkons, preferred walkons, transfers, and whether or not the following players will still be in the mix or not. Some might graduate...some may still be in the mix. I simply don't know. So...a little help please, and we might find where 8 of the 19 rivals recruits fit, and perhaps others if indeed there are more. And again, on some or all, I may be way-off, so don't read more into it.

N/A Zach Line WalkOn?
95 Mickey Dollens Graduating?
81 Mario Walker Graduating?
29 Chase Kennemer Graduating?
93 Chris Parham Graduating?
72 Ross Nigh Graduating?
5 Zach Zimmerman Graduating?
4 Kellis Cunningham Graduating?
83 Phillip Burley MIA?
21 Deyon McElroy MIA?
13 Alex Odiari MIA?
23 Chris Castro MIA?
54 Taylor Bon Played?
26 A'Darius Medford Played?
29 Shaun Moore Played?
42 Anthony Sowe Played?
31 Bennie Thomas Transfer? DB
64 Jesse Andrew Transfer? DL
59 Justin Padron Transfer? LB
6 Winston Gamso WalkOn?
57 Dylan McCagg WalkOn?
28 Keith Robinson WalkOn?

you are pretty far off as to kids that are graduated, some actually will be juniors not seniors and which were walkons-suffice to say there will be a lot of attrition between now and August 1, 2009. I do understand that Nigh is no longer with us. Kennemer, Moore, Castro, McCragg, Gamaso, Andrew, Padron, are all walkons. Robinson and Line are Scholarship players although Line is a grayshirt reportingh in January. Dollens would only be a Junior next year I believe. I think Walker graduates.

I was actually thinking about Walker b/c I know when he matriculated. He's got one more year if he redshirted, but I don't know if he did. Your comments draw my number from 74 to 68, leaving Walker in b/c we don't know for sure and w/ 10 questionmarks still remaining from this list. This is BEFORE we add the incoming recruits.

Yeah, I think you are right...whether they come from this list or not, or even a portion...we are looking at least 8-10 additional attrition before we get to greyshirts incoming January 2010, that is, if Jones & Co. are taking 25 in this class, including JUCOs.

Yeah, he is now up to 235 lbs (from 195 lbs when he signed) and has dropped his forty time to 4.6 from 4.7! Looks like we have a LINEBACKER!

I must admit to being a little skeptical of the legitimacy of those claims. Increased his body weight my 40 pounds (more than 20% of his starting weight) and cut a tenth of a second off his 40 time in 1 year? I sure hope its true, but that seems a little unlikely to me.

The claims come from Line, himself. The forty time would be tough to prove out but the size wouldn't. He says that he has been working out with a personal trainer 4 times a week so that would make a big difference.
