There was a rumor going around that that incident was what convinced the Capitals to allow future Hall of Famer Scott Stevens sign a lucrative (for the time) contract with the St. Louis Blues.

Of course, the fact that Washington got back five first-round draft choices as compensation probably eased their pain a little, too.

that and old Abe Pollin was too cheap to spend the $1 Million to re-sign him. Someone did an analysis of that and those draft choices included Brendan Witt and Sergei Gonchar who had credible years with the Capitals and both were traded away for young talent and draft choices. But there are also those that point to that fact that the Caps went to the Eastern Conference finals that year, and with Stevens probably would have won a Stanley Cup at some point when Kolzig finally arrived on the scene.
