Turner is a nice guy but he is no Josh McCowen.

As to the HP question - how about Charlie Berry - and on our current roster we have KellyTurner and Zach Boyd - both on offensive line. Willaim Webb is also on the team now although probably not likely to hit the field. Also a few years back we had another O-line - center I think - cant recall his name.

The HP offensive lineman get better later and work their butts off, although it will be a good sign when we only take the 6-3 and up ones....
Josh McClown was not very good at SMU. He somehow played a little in the NFL, just enough to exposed as a fraud.

He had an I problem. Interceptions and Intelligence. But you're right about Turner. He's even worse than McClown.
Wow, it never ceases to amaze me how bitter some people STILL are that Josh found success after he left SMU. It's almost like he did something to you personally?

I believe Gamso...He is the walk-on from Highland Park...
Has SMU had any HP recruits who have stayed since Doak Walker or his grandson, Ryan Wolcott?
(answering my own question) DT Richard Neely, SMU '82.

He's a seven year NFL veteran currently with the Panthers squad who has started 31 games in the NFL. Boy, he's really been pulling the wool over everybody's eyes with that pretended ability.

He was a highly rated recruit who played for your school. I don't understand the animosity towards the guy.

Wow, I really am slow. Just noticed Glen has been calling him McClown. I had a girl break up with me recently and it hurt at first and then I realized she had to since she was able to get a much better job out of state. Now I realize I would have done the exact same thing as her and we have become friends again since I was able to shed my bitterness.

Seems to me we have a lot of people on this board who are suffering from the-backup-quarterback-is-better syndrome. But don't worry. It happens at all levels of football across the United States.

Just remember, Jones knows just smidge more about quarterback play and can evaluate it just a little bit more than most of us do. I'm going to defer to him on this.

It also probably didn't help Turner when he was suspended for two games earlier this season.

But...but... I read the sports page and all the stuff on Rivals and Scout. And I have watched football all my life. You mean he is better qualified to decide who starts and how he wants SMU to develope in the long run??? Surely you jest.
When will I start feeling stimulated??

Re: Stallions comment, I think it would be really cool to have a quarterback on the team named SCHLITZ. That said, I don't understand what these kids (Meeks, Turner, et al) are thinking, or who is advising them, when they give up an SMU degree for a piece of paper from Northwesten St. or whatever. It is not my intention to knock on SHSU, Texas St. or anybody, but do these kids honestly believe that 1-aa will give them some kind of shot at the NFL or something. I know it has been known to happen, but seriously??? who is giving these kids advice on life

Edit: Unless he's just really unhappy at SMU for non-football-related issues. Then it makes sense to transfer

If he wants to be part of a more exclusive group he should try switching to TE first and then transfer.

Ooops, not TE in the runny shoot. Never mind.

I think more often they just want to play. If they get to the NFL then great but you don't want to spend your last 3-4 football playings years (even if you don't expect to play in the NFL) sitting on the bench. It comes down to the desire to compete and play. Some players are content to sit on the bench and get a degree and others aren't.

Good point. And more often than not, the guys who are content to ride the pine are not the ones you want playing QB for your team....well, maybe they're ok for YOUR team, but we don't want them here

I actually thought you must have been kidding with this question. I guess you were not paying attention in the early 80's? Seems like Lance McIllhenny would have been hard to miss otherwise.

David Richards, Andrew Campbell, the De La Garza kid as well. Richards, McIllhenny, Neely, Campbell and De La Garza were all Top 100 type recruits-Richards, Neely and McIllhenny were Blue Chippers-Texas Top 20 or so in those Days. The problem isn't the HP kids-the problem is that the Blue Chip HP kids are no longer interested in SMU. SMU has signed way too many spare HP kids in the last 20 years who had no business getting a D1A scholarship. Almost without exception SMU is the only team to offer these guys.

You're right - some guys are willing to accept a role as a 2nd or 3rd teamer and others aren't. I think it just depends on the make-up of the kid...I'm sure he recognizes the value of a degree from SMU as opposed to SHSU or the like. I try not to hold it against a kid if he just wants to play and thinks there's a better chance elsewhere.

They could very well be being told that they will be cut if they don't transfer. We need to make space and clear out the non-hackers.
