doh's reputation has not changed since he got ran out of unc and will always be the same - he's a great recruiter but his players hate him. that unc team that won the title...that was doh's players but roy williams coaching. i'm sure most of you know, but the unc players went up to the AD and said doh leaves or we leave and doh got the boot. players do not like playing for this guy. end of story. a program cannot be successful if this is the case. top notch recruiter, bottom tier head coach.

Seems like you really don't like Coach D. You have claimed to be on the inside. So what are you seeing to substantiate your claims?

Regarding his problems at UNC, he inherited a good roster for the first year and exceeded expectations with it, then followed up by signing a great recruiting class. He lost four key players for the following year and had only a couple of big-time players returning, both seniors. The inherited soph and junior classes were very weak. They had a terrible year, setting Doh up as a possible lame duck and injuring recruitment for the next year. Then the freshman-dominated '03 team lost Sean May in early January, had no inside game, and went to the NIT (19 wins). The previous fall, he was able to sign only one recruit.

Ray Felton liked Doh and spoke up for him, as Brandan Haywood did earlier. McCants was hostile. May might have been unhappy but was discreet about it in public. (Doh was [deleted] him for being fat and out of shape, and [deleted] McCants for defensive lapses.) At least a couple of reserve players were unhappy.

He has acknowledged that he didn't do a good job of managing the players' feelings back then. It may not be his strong suit, but I would be surprised if he is still making gross mistakes.

I like Doh, but if he hadn't come here I still think Bob Hoffman would've been a good choice. The guy won at UTPA, took Tubbs's place at OU, and has Mercer 7-2 with a win over Alabama.

My biggest criticisms of Doh focus on the staff that he has assembled which ties into recruiting. We all know that recruiting is what's its all about.
Although some think its not important to have outstanding local relationships with local HS & JC coaches it is vital to the success of this program. We have some of the best talent in the country locally & state wide in the HS & JC ranks. The positives that come from having local/Texas players are numerous.

Major mistakes have been made in Doh's hiring of his coaching staff.
He has had 2 opportunities to correct this when Garland & Irvin left.
Promoting Farmer from within from a operations position & having Lutz as your recruiting coordinator have to be seriously questioned.

Here's a few things that should have been considered re: asst. coaches/recruiting.

Hire a local HS coach as an Asst. Some that should be considered are McNeely from Duncanville, Anthony Morgan from Plano West, David Milson, Cedar Hill or JD Mayo, Skyline. There are many more.

In addition, hire an asst coach from the JC ranks with a great reputation, proven winner & someone that is connected not only in the state of Texas but nationally as well. Steve Green @ South Plains Junior College would be an example of what I'm talking about.

When you look @ the resumes of the coaches I mention above it makes me scratch my head to figure out why we don't go in this type of direction.
Nothing against Lutz & Farmer but they can't come close to the skins on the walls of the guys I mentioned. In addition, having a couple of coaches like this would take alot of the recruiting pressures off of Doh because they would be able to help in this area. Nothing against Lutz & Farmer personally but I never see them in this type of recruiting role.

These are just a few examples of what I feel is the biggest problem with our program. I can live with the over coaching to a certain degree but this is the major problem that needs to be corrected. If we are going to get to Top 25 status there has to be this type of change. Can we get there with Doh as coach, I think so. I hope so. But if I was Orsini this is the first place I would look @ to improve the product on the court.

Lets just keep waiting & waiting.
I believe that JJ surrounded himself with an outstanding coaching staff.
I do not believe that Doh has done the same. I would like to see the same type of commitment to the basketball coaching staff.

I didn't understand a lot that went on tonight at the game. Why didn't we have a couple rebounding as we shot foul shots...we missed them and they got the ball and brought it right down...with no pressure and scored...twice. I was numb when we lost. I was disappointed, but I support our coaches and will attend all games both basketball and football. I left the game tonight just wondering how much A&M will beat us by...30, 40, or 50 or will we get our desire back and play a good ball game...I really would not attempt to make a guess at the score! If we don't get leadership, and toughness on the boards....it will be a long year!

It's really hard to find a fan with a great spirit like you, Argyle Pony. I have always been a good support of Coach Doh and our basketball team, but I just couldn't get over the feeling of "winning the game we should win". It's really a heart-breaker for me.

Since teams either run a man or some type of zone D, what the hell are they practicing?

Agreed - just about a fire-able offense in itself. I can't imagine showing up for a big meeting with the owners of the company and saying "well, I haven't really looked at the financials as much as I should have over the last 3 weeks". I might be fired on the spot - and deservedly so! I can't believe he said that!

The Mustangs seemed confounded by the Golden Lions' 2-3 zone defense. SMU played "catch" around the perimeter trying to get an open shot instead of hitting the seams and attacking Pine Bluff. It resulted in long, fruitless possessions concluded by off-balance shots inside the final seconds.

I just laughed out loud at work at that first sentence. I didn't think it was possible for a D-1 program to be "confounded" by a 2-3 ZONE!! If it's a tough matchup zone or some other look that isn't too common, then that's one thing. But a 2-3 ZONE?!? Once again, IN GAME ADJUSTMENTS are nowhere to be found. I don't care if you haven't practiced much against a zone. If you've been coaching for longer than 3 days, then you should be able to recognize the most common defense in all of basketball and make changes to your offensive attack. Ridiculous.

Didn't Dement get reprimanded by Copeland for essentially these same comments? Seems to be a common theme around SMU athletics.
