Having an apparel deal, isn't the same as a 'shoe' deal. That's pretty much code for finding an angle, tip-toeing the line, and living in the gray area. Shoe companies and reps have their role in all of this, but upwardly mobile, young coaches, in todays hoops industry, work the system from all sides. “When I first committed to SMU, I thought it would take a couple of years of building. But with these players coming in, we should make a run. We have a lot of heavy hitters. It could get real ugly for a lot of teams we play.â€- Jalen Jones
With all due respect, if you aren't hiring AAU coaches nowadays to act as your recruiters, then you are behind the game. They have the knowledge and contacts to know who the up and comers are before they begin making headlines. Knowing that can give you a big advantage when going up against other schools. That and offering substantial playing time, assuming that you don't have a positive history going for you.
But I digress... Texas, A&M, KSU, Kansas, Oklahoma State, Kentucky, and many, many more have all hired AAU coaches in the recent past to get certain recruits or to boost recruiting overall. Should it be illegal? Probably. Is it? No. Scott Drew has landed one Top 25 class in his tenure at Baylor. And because of that, he's supposedly cheating? He's lost more Top 100 recruits (that were committed then decommitted) than he's landed. If he were cheating, would that be the case? Possibly, but I seriously doubt it. There is no "gray" area to the rules. There are things that are frowned upon- such as hiring the AAU coach of a top rated recruit- but that's not a "gray" area- it's 100% legal. It's been said that Drew recruits negatively (as in, "You don't want to go to X school because...) and that's why a lot of opposing coaches don't like him. While I understand that, it's also pretty hypocritical as a ton of Big XII coaches recruited Baylor very negatively (understandably) after the scandal that happened here. All that being said, I'm glad to see Baylor making a splash in a sport that gets a lot of attention. It's been a long time since my Bears last did that. Also, for what its worth, I wish y'all all the success in the world. There has always been somewhat of a rivalry between SMU and Baylor, but I also find myself a SMU fan many times as we are similar in many ways.
i know they don't teach you much at Baylor but plagiarizing yourself isn't necessary here.

Yes, anyone who rises up and starts doing better must be cheating. BU in hoops, TCU in football, Rice in baseball. All cheaters, right? TC
With all due respect, Baylor has had nowhere near the success in b-ball that TCU has had in football or Rice in baseball. I think Drew has done a helluva job at your school and I don't believe he is cheating.....he has recruited the players, but now he has to win. SMU-12 NCAA appearances, 1 Final Four
2014-15 & 2016-17 AAC Men's Basketball Champs
True, but Drew has brought the program from the worst BCS conference team to the #22 ranked team in just a few years. I didn't think the climb to the NCAA's would have been so fast.
I wish all the success in the world to Baylor (except against us, of course). Granted, it's mainly just so they will jump up and knock off Texas, Texas Tech, OU, and Kansas more often than not. Would love to see them be in the mix for the Big 12 title soon.
I'm the same way with SMU.I hope they win every game except when they play Baylor....especially against TCU
I never said that Baylor basketball = TCU football or Rice baseball. Baylor hoops will have to produce more sustained success for that. The common denominator is that all 3 of those were losing programs which managed to get up off the mat and start winning. However, since you brought that up........ what do you think would happen if Baylor basketball kept improving up to where TCU football is right now(top 10 national ranking) or to the level of national champs like Rice baseball? IMO the calls of "baylor is cheating" would grow even louder from a few people(see above on this post) than it is right now. No one has any evidence of wrongdoing but yet they feel free to sling mud anyway. Maybe at some point the shoe will be on the other foot. SMU can start winning in football or MBB and will have to deal with this. TC
Don't kid yourself, talk to coaches around the state (off record), he is despised for his cheating. I'm not saying that he's not a good coach, or that he doesn't work his tail off, but he is a dirty son of a gun.
