Re: Bet the Frogs love this guy
No getting around it, it is spot on. Bowls are about making money. The whole system is just corrupt as all hell, but if/until we get a playoff, its what we all have to deal with. College football isn't a meritocracy. Tell me something I don't know.
The problem I have with the BCS is that teams from the Big East and ACC automatically get the big money bowls over non BCS programs.
I don't consider the Mountain West to be "Mid Major". TCU, Utah could run circles around Cincinnati and many ACC programs. It is an injustice that TCU didn't get a better bowl than the Poinsetta Bowl. Pony 81
This is absurd. Have you seen the stats on ticket sales for the Fiesta Bowl? Word is that Texas sold all but 2,000 of their 17.5k allotment to the "donors" while OSU sold only about 3,000 of theirs. Both schools turned to public sales of their seats. I can tell you that many Texas donors have put their "premium" seats back to the school since the seats are generally terrible, location-wise. If they want to keep the bowl system, first they need to line up games that people want to see. Does anyone expect Texas v Ohio State, USC v Penn State, or Alabama v Utah to be close games??? maybe the Rose bowl will be okay, but few really believe either big 10 team or Utah really stand a chance. Although, I will be the first to say that anything can happen when you get 6 weeks to gameplan one team. As for the others, who cares? Central Mich vs Fl Atl? Give me a break - total waste of time. It tastes better when served from a Bowl (game)!
which is after the fiesta bowl in phoenix. 25-30 private jets are flying future recruits - 8th 9th and 10th graders - out to the game. be there. It tastes better when served from a Bowl (game)!
Meanwhile, Florida State and Wisconsin are battling it out in the Champs Sports Bowl in Orlando. And look! *gasp* It's not sold out! But BIG HUGE STATE SCHOOL POWERHOUSE OF THE UNIVERSE FSU is playing in their home state! And it's against a VERY DESERVING HUGE BIG TEN SCHOOL! Surely, those people all must be in the restroom.
The linked article pisses me off but also sort of eases the pain. It pisses me off because it's ridiculous that TCU's strength should be judged by their traveling fan base. But I say it 'eases the pain' because it admits that the bowls are all about ticket sales and money. Other than the NC game (orange bowl pt 2), not one of these bowls is about who is deserving or who has earned a spot. I can't wait to see the amazing turnout for the Cincy-Va Tech Orange Bowl. Sent from my Motorola brick.
Only problem is that they arent selling many tickets. It tastes better when served from a Bowl (game)!
BSU brought lots of fans to the Fiesta in 06. It was sold out with as much Orange as Crimson. I think the Dec 23rd date and a crappy economy did not help their bowl game this year. BSU is a community college type school without the numbers of wealthy alumni like UT. However, if they had gone to the Fiesta this year the whole town of Boise would have been scrambling for tickets.
Thought it was my duty to correct some misinformation. I am glad I only made time to sit down and watch the BSU TCU game. It lived up to its hype and then some. Great game. The OSU Oregon match up should be interesting.
If you think that way, why don't we just forego playing the bowls altogether, forget who has the best teams, and award bowl victories based on average attendance? That's essentially what this Markazi numbnuts is arguing. In his book, private, limited-enrollment schools like TCU and SMU should compete attendance-wise with large, come-one-come-all public schools. And if they can't, they don't deserve any bowl or national honors. The mythical national championship should be decided among only those schools who bring the most fans -- not the schools that field the best teams. Is this really what you think college football should be? ![]() These Frogs have horns!
Don't mind him. He's just a bitter old coot.
Whoa there, froggy. chill out. TCU was BCS bound this year, FINALLY, until the freshman kicker choked....repeatedly....against Utah. I know TCU would have had a bigger fan showing had they been in a BCS bowl after Xmas, but that doesn't matter because you didnt make it. In general, nobody here thinks the crazy way youre talking, so put a cork in it. It tastes better when served from a Bowl (game)!
But a playoff would fill the bowls with people. If the Champs sports bowl was the first round of a playoff it would feature a 6 vs. 10 seed. You'd have Utah vs. Ohio State with the winner getting to face the winner of Alabama vs. ECU in the next round at the Meineke Car Care Bowl.
