Just Back From the GameWhew..................
Why does it seem like every team we play executes their offense and defense better than us???? After watching this for 2 plus seasons, this is a trend............ Since Doh is a big believer in studying leaders and management styles, here's one, hire better people than you. His staff may be great guys but they all look like young yes men. I think Doh needs a strong X's and O's guy with some miles on him who can help Doh in game. Doh needs to be more like a Mack Brown. Great recruiter and hire good assistants to run the offense and defense........ First time to see Faye - my initial thought is Georgia Tech was glad to have the scholarship open up........ Pushing the opponent away from the basket and giving up the 3 might have worked for N Carolina 10 years ago but we have got to start defending the 3 better. I hate that damn 1-3-1. They killed us early from the deep corner 3 and the short porch......... Turn Williams loose. I don't particularly like a point who is shoot first guy but I wish Doh would let him shoot earlier in the shot clock if he is open.....He's got a nice stroke.... I wish our Senegal contingent had half the toughness and savvy Otis has in the paint. UTSA had a shrimp running point - 5'6" and a buck 30 maybe and how many times did we knock that shrimp silly when he penetrated????? Not one damn time..........We need to develop a real sense of nastiness especially at home. Quit benching a player after one screwup!!!! Nyakundi loses his man and boom, out he comes. He had a couple of good games and then bench time. Drives me nuts. It just makes players tentative..... I feel sorry for the players - they will get their guts run out tomorrow - which will do wonders for their confidence not to mention their legs for the Wednesday game.........
Just back from the game, the guys played hard, but this is yet another bad loss. University of Texas San Antonio?
There were two high points tonight, visited with Stallion at halftime, and One Trick Pony joined us during the game.
the nyakundi benching was 30 seconds into the second half. a prime example of the complete lack of flow and continuity. We throw so many random combinations out there, its like the other team finally finds one it can exploit. Or maybe 30 minutes into the game our guys have finally lost focus and are as confused by the lineup chaos as those watching.
Why did Dia and Faye get only 9 and 11 minutes respectively?
“When I first committed to SMU, I thought it would take a couple of years of building. But with these players coming in, we should make a run. We have a lot of heavy hitters. It could get real ugly for a lot of teams we play.â€- Jalen Jones
Doh's substitution pattern appears to be largely driven by jerking players for missing an assignment. I would guess the ratio of screwup substitution to orderly/planned substitution is probably 4 to 1..........Nyakundi didn't spend much time on the floor in the first half either before getting jerked for losing his man of defense..............In my opinion, it just leads to players playing overly tight and trying not to screwup rather than relaxing and playing...........
went to th eTCU Game and watched the A$M game - the consistency on the comments regardless of the game is the same - TOO MANY PLAYERS PLAYING TOO MANY MINUTES!!!! It's not Nolan Richardson's "40 minutes of hell" full court pressure that we're playing. PICK A ROTATION AND STICK WITH IT! Orsini is looking the fool here - No soccer playoffs for first time in quarter century, football could've won several more games with status quo at QB, and basketball is in COMPLETE RUINS. I don't care what your roster looks like - when you're trying to do things "top 25," you simply dont lay eggs in hoops - it's too easy to rebuild - very different than football.
Doh is in his 3rd YEAR! From what I can see, all the recruiting in the world is not going to change anything gameday between yr 3 and yr 6. I am finally to the point I never thought I would be - Doh is simply not the guy. Orsini, start looking..... yr 4 should be ultimatum time. Hell, we could spend alot less and get a guy like TCU did!!!
oh, but by the 14 minute mark of the second half he was ready to go? I guess he had time to study the opponent for the first hour and fifteen minutes of the evening, problem is not many guys can enter a game after sitting that long and play worth a damn or have a feel for the game. I think that airball he threw up that landed 5 feet short of the rim showed how cold and out of sync he was.
fellas, UTSA was a team we should've pushed around. Bamba and Dia should've been dunking all night. Malone was primed to clean up any garbage. I just don't get it. I really don't. One sequence in particular was comical...Bamba rushed out to help guard the 5'7 point guard, leaving their 300 lb toad inside to get a garbage layin.
besides flow and guys not being afraid to make a mistake, there is one major reason to pick 5 guys and 2 role player subs and stick with them: accountability. A smaller unit has to basically feel responsible for stepping up and winning a game. Doh is letting all these guys off the hook by rotating to the point that none of these guys are on the hook or feel accountable personally for winning these games. 2 months of practice should be separating the men from the boys on the 2008-09 squad by now. Its like Doh is subbing and hoping someone will step up and a light will go off. It may not be completely fair, but for godsake pick 5 guys based on the practice and 10 games played so far, and tell those 5 that its up to them to beat UT corpus christi and don't look for help and don't look at the bench.
my impression of the game was that UTSA scored 30 more points than SMU from the 3 point line on SMU's home court. That should not happen. Its obvious SMU is marshmellow inside both offensively and defensively -just not physically strong or offensively talented enough inside and can't perform one of the basic requirements of the game-the jump shot. Simply can't consistently put the ball in the hole from the field or the perimeter. Don't really fault the effort or hustle and we did some things very well such as the guards(Williams and McCoy) who repeatedly penetrated very well. We need some basic jump shooters. A very high percentage of our points came from drives the baskets-SMU can go half a game without hitting jump shots-most aren't even looking to shoot.
