I keep thinking we will hear the other side of the story but it has not yet come out. I can not imagine denying someone the right to interview. Now if they leave while under contract, then action can be taken if you wish, but to fire someone just for talking to another person is pretty rough. And I agree that I think it will be a tough job to fill with a high caliber candidate.

I do not think it will be hard to fill. Some coach out in the cold with a family to feed and bills to pay will jump at the chance.

Press accounts also indicate the AD was very upset when his coach failed to inform him of his intention to interview. After learning of the scheduled interview, the AD then warned his coach that he would fire him if he interviewed. He expected his coach to honor the remaining 3 years on his contract. He had been afforded a 5 year contract to insure the long term stability of the program and recruiting. If the coach could not honor his committment to BU he would be fired. Coach had 3 days warning before the interview to decide his fate. He chose to interview and the AD was forced to back up his ultimatum.

Personally I admire the AD for taking a hard stance and seeking to protect the interests of his program. There is nothing more disrupting to any program than a coach who is always looking for the next deal and trolling for offers every year. Guys like Rodriguez and Petrino are prime examples and their true character is really revealed when the situation changes and they cannot live up to expectations. However, I fully understand that constant coaching changes and turn over is the norm and programs are forced to deal with the reality of the way the game is played in the sports world vs. the business world. At the same time, when a program makes a long term committment to a coach and is monetarily responsible to that coach ( win or lose) for the duration of the contract it should have expectations that the contract should be honored. Maybe the answer is big buck buy out clauses in contracts to stabilize the contract and compensate the program for their monetary losses. Rodriguez is the perfect example being afforded a new long term contract with a $4,000,000 buy out to restrict his seasonal trolling. When he jumped to Michigan he blatantly lied about having secret personal oral assurances from the then AD that his buy out would not be enforced. This alone should tell everyone everything they need to know about the credibility and trustworthyness of this weasle like person. Great response by WV to sue Rodriguez, expose his character in court and enforce the buy out.
