Donald Massey to Visit Kansas and Arkansas

Postby Mike Damone » Mon Nov 10, 2003 10:48 pm

According to rivals. No mention of SMU except that we are one of his many suitors along with TCU. Wouldn't that be a strange Thanksgiving in the future if it happened?
The attitude dictates that you don't care whether she comes, stays, lays, or prays. I mean whatever happens, your toes are still tappin'. Now when you got that, then you have the attitude.

I'm counting on Richuel to weild his brotherly influence here. If we could somehow get this guy, he and Jessie Henderson would be the fastest pair of recruits we've seen around here in .... forever.

Don't dismiss KU as a complete afterthought here. They haven't had a lot of success recently, but they are improving and Coach Mangino has installed a potent offense. Kansas is a real threat with Massey. Not the leader, I would think, but a legitimate concern, at least.

HF, couldn't Kansas say the same thing about us? SMU for football, c'mon?

They have an even better right to say that, but quistion is, would he rather join a crappy team and possibly play right away, or join a crappy team sit the bench for a year or two. From all I hear about Donald M., he seems the kind of guy who would want to showcase NOW. We'll see...

No matter which crappy team he signs with, he'll play. Mangino went out and filled holes with some good JC guys and has a great wide-open offense. KU is a good sports school and probably ranks with SMU overall academically. It has a beautiful campus like we do and a good stadium on campus. Let's hope his bro can get him in to help rebuild the Ponies but don't get overconfident. He has good choices. I hope he wants to play where his friends and relatives can come see him and be part of something special in rebuilding the SMU legacy.

LA, no doubt about that, but at least his brother plays here and campus is less than an hour from his house. For a guy who can go anywhere to leave the state for Kansas is fairly unusual. Its not like Kansas will be his only Big 12 or high major offer.

I know, HF. I was actually thinking the same thing as you at first, Kansas?? Then I though about what a Kansas fan would say if they read this. We are currently the worst D1 program in the nation. But it would be very nice to have both Massey bros on the Hilltop next year.

Yea, I thought of that when I wrote it maybe it is a little absurd, then I said to myself how many KU fans are reading Ponyfans? And do I care? Not many and no. Hey I'll always have fondness in my heart for Kansas football...they made 9/02/00 memorable.

the schools he lits now and the school he has listed in the past as the school he would jump at are LSU now and OU during the summer. Those schools generally have recruited among the top 3 in the nation lately-so he might not get an offer to his favorite. If you were Massey would you rather play for one of the designers of OUs passing attack now at Kansas or at SMU where we have shown no signs of a passing game in years.

Thanks, that response should help.
That's exactly why we need someone like him! A speed receiver with a little height who can stretch the field and turn medium passes into long scores. He comes here, and he's a star.

Lets face it the schools he is looking at, like most others treat their players like gods(big man on campus). It has been a while since thats the case At SMU. They help them with the classes, turn their heads when boys are boys, have training tables, quality dorm rooms, girls swooning, winning programs and more. How Phil gets fresh meat to consider is remarkable. After a while Phil's story has to have some substance( UT can sell the dream but they back it up) or "the emperor has no clothes" reality will set in with the potential recruites. Can only hope it has'nt already..

I think they will buy it (as will we) through this season (our guys are not on the field yet, etc etc) but we need to show some momentum on the field next season to keep up any recruiting. Fortunately I think with last years class getting in the mix and the fact that you can only go up from this year, that will happen.

Agreed. We'll see indicators next year of Coach Bennett's ability to evaluate talent, but they'll still be young. We'll get a taste next year, with the big jump coming in 2005.
