Women/ECUhalf SMU 44 ECU 40
Great game by the ladies, especially after that debacle Thursday night. DMN game story:
Final: SMU women 80, East Carolina 73 3:53 PM Sat, Jan 10, 2009 Bobbi Roquemore UNIVERSITY PARK - Junior forward Brittany Gilliam had 23 points, 11 rebounds seven assists and six steals to lead SMU over East Carolina, 80-73 Saturday at the Moody Coliseum. Gilliam was on fire right from the start as she scored the Mustangs' first eight points and had 13 points, six rebounds and five assists by halftime. Her sizzling start turned out to critical for the Mustangs as they missed 12 of their first 15 shots and East Carolina made 9 of 14. But the Mustangs (9-7, 2-1 C-USA) surged ahead of the Pirates (10-6, 1-2) and were up, 44-40 at halftime, thanks to a few momentum-changing plays and some unexpected contributors. With SMU down, 19-14, G Haley Day (Rockwall) was fouled on a 3-point shot and made all three free throws to tighten things up. A 3-pointer at the top of the key by G Jillian Samuels (Mesquite Horn) gave the Mustangs their first lead of the game, 31-28, with 5:43 to go. And freshman F Alicia Mitcham (West Mesquite), who scored just five points this season, had six points in the first half alone. In the second half, C Christine Elliott and G LaShandra Hill (FW Dunbar) logged key minutes to help the Mustangs keep the Pirates at bay. A drive to the hoop by Samuels with 4:30 to go gave the Mustangs a 69-59 lead with 4:30 to go. SMU ruled the boards with 45 rebounds (23 offensive) to East Carolina's 29. SMU's next game is Jan. 18 at Tulsa.
Nice win. ECU has played very well this year (until this trip), and a win over them is big. Thursday was ugly, and this game was very much-needed to get our team's confidence before we go up to the black hole that is Tulsa next weekend.
Way to go, Ponies!
