Stallion...Recruiting services don't tell final story!!

Postby Stampede » Mon Nov 17, 2003 2:48 pm

Noticed where Philip Rivers, current great QB at North Carolina State, was rated as the #67 best QB in the country in high school. In addition, Rivers was recruited by Georgia and most other schools as a TIGHT END.

SMu will recruit well this year and will not have a problem getting players with whom Bennett feels he can win.

you've got to be crazy-Phillip Rivers was a top nationally recruited QB-one of the top players in the nation.

I know he was player of the year in Alabama his senior year, but not sure how highly recruited he was. Something tells me that he probably was pretty highly thought of since he started the first game of his true freshman year though.

That was a pathetic argument anyways. Going back four years to find an example of a guy who was not highly recruit but turned out good. Surely you can find one more recent than that.

The point is not that it doesn't happen, but that the odds are much more in favor for a highly recruited guy to be successful, than it is for a non-highly reruited guy.

I'd much rather go after guys that everyone wants, than to pin my hopes on diamonds in the rough.

The attitude dictates that you don't care whether she comes, stays, lays, or prays. I mean whatever happens, your toes are still tappin'. Now when you got that, then you have the attitude.

Well put Mike. I would rather take my chances with the highly touted recruit as well. Just for the record Phil Steele had Rivers as the #40 QB out of High School. by comparison he reted Rick Joe Meeks #56, Chris Phillips #176, and Rich Bartel #96 Kelan Luker 375, and David Page #116.

...and our best WR is a former HS Safety not even offered by UTEP where he wanted to go.

Conversely, our highest rated WR has been otherwise unproductive so far in his career (ranked the No. 8 wide receiver in the state by Lone Star Recruiting…ranked 83rd nationally amongst wide outs by Rivals.com…listed as one of the state’s best 100 preps by The Dallas Morning News and Houston Chronicle…also a member of Lonestar Recruiting and Longhorn Link state Top 100s)

Having said that, I would rather have more higher rated players to choose from...like Parcells said, you don't want to go around the country to find the atypical 5'9" LBs that are pro calibre.

and none of our underclassmen WRs should probably be starting at the Division 1A level either. They may be great kids but they've pretty well proven that themselves this year.

Stall:

You are usually dependable in your recruiting objectivity...but, you missed the mark here.

Rivers was NOT a big time recruit...check the link to the Florida State board:

http://www.floridastate.rivals.com/showmsg.asp?fid=1079&tid=25711042&sid=&style=2

I tried to docum, ent this on the Rivals site but their rianking archives only go back to 2002.

I am right 99% of the time and this ain't falling in the 1% !!!

scroll up-Player of the Year in Alabama and rated a lot higher than any of the 3 star kids we've signed. He was highly recruited-that's a fact-the thing is he decided to sign in mid-term in December so he wasn't noticed as much - you can find one source to say just about anything you want-the Rivals ratings change all through the year. By your definition SMU has never had a highly recruited players since we never have signed a player that Florida St wanted. You know Alabama produces a couple of kids every year who can really play-maybe not up to your standards.
