LAS CRUCES, N.M. (AP) - New Mexico State quarterback J.J. McDermott is transferring to SMU and receiver LaVorick Williams will leave for Texas Tech, new coach DeWayne Walker said Tuesday. Walker met with both players and discussed their opportunities. Both decided transferring was in their best interests. McDermott, the Aggies’ backup the past two seasons behind Chase Holbrook, played in four games last fall and started once as a freshman in 2007. With Holbrook graduating, McDermott had been the expected starter for next season until former coach Hal Mumme was fired in December. Williams played in nine games at receiver and returned kickoffs. He plans to participate in track and field, not football, at Texas Tech. (Copyright 2009 by The Associated Press. All Rights Reserved.)
6'5 220 from Katy Cinco Ranch.
From NMSU: High School: McDermott was a first team all-district, all-region and third team all-state honoree his senior season when he passed for 2,315 yards and 21 touchdowns while leading Cinco Ranch High School to the third round of the playoffs. He averaged 17.8 yards per completion and had two touchdown passes of 99 yards. He completed 36-of-71 pass attempts for 401 yards and four touchdowns his junior year before an injury caused him to miss action.
Apparently it’s a Katy QB or bust
SMU-12 NCAA appearances, 1 Final Four
2014-15 & 2016-17 AAC Men's Basketball Champs
he got the majority of snaps in spring scrimmages(which are generally inflated) but he was 86 for 146 and 1033 yards 5 TDs and I think 6 Ints in 3 scrimmages. He got sacked some too-don't think he's that fleet. Anyway not bad for a walkon plus he's got Division 1A experience in a handful of games including against teams like Nebraska and Boise St. He'll get a third year to adjust and he has experience in a wide open passing attack.
