Basketball recruiting update/DISD

Postby papawasamustang » Thu Jan 08, 2009 11:26 am

I spoke with a BB coach @ Carter & he said that relations with SMU are very good & that Lutz comes by often & Doh has been by too.
Sz they have NO PROBLEM recommending any of their kids to come SMU.
SMU is welcome anytime.

Sz we are probably out of the picture for Jarred Shaw, their big center.

However, we are in the mix for Doward Evans, their outstanding PG.
Evans has been an all district player since his FRESHMAN year.
He's averaging 20.5 pts, 4.5 assists & leds the area in 3pt shooting as a junior. He is also the #12 rated player in the state for 2010 according to Texashoops.

Texashoops describes him like this.

12 Doward Evans
Dallas (TX) Carter G 5-10/ list
Big-time scorer, can really shoot it from deep 3 point range, quick release, very active, quick to the hole, can create his own shot, quick on the ball defender.

With the addition of Evans, this makes 4 out of the top 12 players in Texas for 2010 interested in SMU. Also, Hinton from Frisco Wakeland is ranked #23 & he is also interested in us.

Here's hoping this interest turns into a commitment or two. All it takes is one or two local guys to get the snowball rolling and suddenly SMU will look attractive once again to local kids...as long as there's some winning mixed in there too!

And what better way to get people interested in the program than to recruit local kids. They already have a built-in following at their respective schools, so that should help put SMU in the minds of more potential fans.

Great update!!! 2010, if not 2011, is probably the proper spacing to grab another PG. Bringing in Walker/Williams/McCoy in back to back years means a certain pass for this year.

I feel like this years team could use another PG (Dubois). I love the speed & quickness of Williams. Its a dimension @ the PG we haven't had in a while. I feel like we need to have another PG that can bring that same up tempo style to the game when Williams is on the bench.
Williams is the only true PG. Walker is a SG in a PG body & I like McCoy @ the 2, splitting time occasionally @ the PG. Walker still needs work on his ballhandling IMO. He may continue to improve that phase of his game & develop into a true pg but I don't see it right now.

I still feel like this team needs to continue to upgrade all positions & try to sign the best players available regardless to position.

I agree with a lot of what you are saying here, especially the bolded portion, but I doubt a PG will want to come here in the '09 class knowing that Williams will be a Senior, McCoy a Soph, and Walker a Junior. That would really limit any minutes he would get as a frosh and not bc he isn't ready to compete but just do to the fact that McCoy and Williams will both play 30+ mpg.

However, I think a top PG would be excited to join the Mustangs in the '10 class. Williams will be finishing up his Senior year at SMU and will hopefully have 2 very good seasons to show for it. McCoy will be a stud that he could tandem with in the backourt. I bet we get a very, very good PG in the 2010 class.

McCoy is the PG of the future, has to be. Not just b/c he's a baller, but b/c his only chance at the next level is to play point. I'm sorta shocked we're looking at so many PGs in 09, and apparently in '10. No way McCoy was brought here to play SG, much like Dubois was told there wouldn't be a McCoy. After all, why would Dubois have left, if he was given the keys at PG for the long haul and McCoy was a 2. Williams is playing very well, but JCs are stop gap not long range.

Shaw commits to Oklahoma State today. Nice job by OSU getting 3 of the top players from the Dallas area in this years recruiting class.
The other 2 are Dowell & Franklin from Duncanville. Makes me want to hurl.

Looks like OSU is doing a great job working the DFW talent.
I'm glad that they are just visiting.
