My JUCO list... what I will say to the assistant AD.

Postby JasonB » Wed Nov 19, 2003 11:53 am

I am meeting with an assistant AD tomorrow, and will ask about our progress with JUCOs.

Normally, I am not a proponent of JUCOs, but this is what I plan on saying:

- THIS is THE MOST IMPORTANT RECRUITING YEAR for the mustangs post-DP. A bad recruiting year, and Bennett loses all of his momentum.

- IF we do not get enough JUCO players this year, the team will struggle due to youth and inexpereince next year. We won't be as bad as this year, but there will not be significant improvement until two years from now. This will also hurt Bennett's recruiting momentum.

- IF we don't make the move now, SMU is going to fall into a pattern of one good recruiting class every 4 years. And therefore one good season every four years. That is not acceptable for the long term success of the program.

- We just need to allow the JUCOs in THIS year. Past that, we have depth with young players and can recruit to fill future positions.

- To get SMU in a position for potential success next year, and to get the momentum rolling, we need to pull in a total of 6 JUCO players this year. We already have the WR, we need a QB, Center, RT, DE, and CB.

I am a huge fan of SMU and firmly believe that the Athletic Department and school need to do what it can to make this happen THIS YEAR. We should NOT blow this opportunity while we have it.

You might also want to stress the importance of winning now in order to get our attendance numbers up into the safe range with the new 1-A attendance requirements starting next year.
SMU's first president, Robert S. Hyer, selected Harvard Crimson and Yale Blue as SMU's colors to symbolize SMU's high academic standards. We are one of the few Universities to have school colors with real meaning...and we just blow them off.

Unfortunately it is only about 3 or so weeks until JC signing date and I don't see our name mentioned by JCs at other positions. Probably too late to do any good.

Jason,

Please read the "2003 WAC Basketball Recruiting Overview" thread.

This is a problem for both football and basketball.

Good Luck

Exactly, we need to win now (and several seasons ago for that matter) to satisfy the attendance requirements so that we can remain Division 1. I have said this numerous times and people tend to ignore it. The administration better change its rules or SMU will not be playing in Division 1 in a few seasons. It is as simple as that. It is sad when we cannot even compete in the lowly WAC. Screw you to all of the decision makers in the athletic department.

Unless you were taking OP's joke model of grouping scholarships as closely as possible so that almost all players are within a two class span seriously, there is no reason to believe that we can have a good team every four years. If Bennett can't keep the momentum up this year with another good class, we won't have the horses to be good in 3-4 years. Better than now but not good. One class does not a team make (I think that is Shakespeare).
