The Charleston Gazette had a good writeup, they seem quite pleased with headlines such as :

"Herd at the Buzzer" and

"Anatomy of a Magic Marshall Moment"

Crazy stuff. As I listened, I immediately thought we should have played it out without calling a timeout. But I didn't have a problem with us calling one with about 21 seconds to play. I probably would have had a problem if there was less than 10.

I know in the past, Doherty usually did like to play it out, ala the TCU buzzer beater Willingham had. I think you are right though, with 21 seconds left, you want to set something up and don't want to risk someone running down and jacking one up with 13 seconds left. Too bad Williams didn't wait 2 more seconds before he made his move.

Nice to have the sound on this replay. Looking at the shot clock, which is clearly visible over our basket, there had to have been just under 3 seconds when he corraled the rebound. First looks I had was that it was really close, a bang bang play, but here you can clearly hear that the buzzer doesnt sound until the shot is clearly in the air.

In looking at the video, whoever was supposed to be on the weakside -- Faye? -- for the putback got completely boxed out. But why are we not sending more people to the boards.

To me, Williams made a poor decsion. Nyakundi set a good screen at the high post. But Williams didn't go to his left. He went to his right to drive and still got trailed by the guy who Nyakundi screened.

The shot wasn't terrible. But where are the red jerseys around the basket? Rebounding is about effort.

I think Williams move was good, he got separation because his defender thought he was going to go around the screen. That video is a bit deceiving, on the other video and watching it live, his look was pretty darn good.

Just guessing, but Doherty may not have wanted agressive rebounding, he may have just wanted Williams to put it up at the buzzer and not risk an over the back foul. Course, it could be that the players got caught up in the moment and became cheerleaders and spectators, hoping the shot would fall.

Unless it is a sure thing, you have to be certain that your shot will be the last shot of regulation. That is something good teams, well-coached teams do. Granted that buzzer beater by Marshall doesn’t go in 99% of the time but that is no excuse. And again, we were abysmal from the line – 56%. That absolutely drives me crazy. McCoy has the highest FT % of the starters at 64% and only one player is above 66% on the entire team – Mike Walker – who is 4 of 4.

You know what, you are right, he did travel, he took a hop step landing on different feet and then picked his pivot foot up before he shot. Can't blame the refs for not calling it.

Nice catch! I totally missed that.

I am emailing the CUSA commissioner at this moment! I expect us to be given the chance to fly back to WV and play a 5 minute overtime!
