are we talking Candidates for the open job at Covenant? We can't possibly be discussing SMU's job. With the trouncing everyone's portfolio has taken, I agree with what someone else said previously; i.e. there is NO WAY the c of c can/will buy out yet another contract. And Doh will get his 5 years.
That said, Reggie Theus did a hell of a job at NMSU and has a pocketful of $ from the Maloof boys now that they canned him from Sacramento.
At the end of this year, Doh loses some of his staff. If he had a good x and o guy on the bench, we could improve. He is running the UNC match-up zone because that's what he knows and occasional man-to-man. So, instead of focusing on new head coaches, focus on new assistant coaches.
I thought in a match-up zone, the defending team is required at times to...umm...match up? No rotation on the zone=wide open threes on the weak side. And once they try to compensate that, back door/alley oop/dunk. Rotate, sag, help. Wish I knew whether it was that our guys simply can't or just won't.
No way Coach Doherty is let go, nor do I think he should be. I'm a huge believer in the danger of playing young guys. For those PonyFans old enough to remember, we had some mediocre/average teams in the early '90s, but when Gerald Lewis, Tim Mason, Mike Wilson, etc., were seniors, they were talented enough and had played together long enough that they won the conference title. That's not to suggest our current cast of young'uns will bump off Memphis in a couple of years, but experience is a vastly underrated criteria in predicting success, IMO. Sure, if you land a freshman like a Derrick Rose, Kevin Love, Tyreke Evans, etc. ... those are different situations, where the talent is so far off the charts it overrides experience. But for teams that don't have NBA-ready talent, having veteran players who have been through the wars is a seriously undervalued asset.
Plagiarize!
Let no one else's work evade your eyes. Remember why the good lord made your eyes. So don't shade your eyes, just Plagiarize, plagiarize, plagiarize! (Only be sure always to call it, please .... "research.")

Look @ the schools we are keeping company with. #290 in the country. Its embarrassing. Other top Asst Coaches around the country: Personally, I like the up & coming HC's that I mentioned originally but some of these guys will be HC's next year. Robert Burke- Georgetown Phil Cunningham- MS State Steve Henson-UNLV Joe Holliday- UNC Russ Springmann- UT Scott Spinelli- Tx A&M
ALL of the assts. need to go. Bring in a couple of guys who will wear the black hat and put an end to this stand-around, no hustle, sissy defense.
Looks like another Sean Sutton situation (thanks dad!). However, he has about 4 JC's coming in next year that will help immediately if he makes it to next year. Hewitt @ GT has to be on a short leash. Landing one of the top recruits in the country may have given him 1 more year.
I think Doherty is back next year but if this thing completely implodes this year -- like the Tulane W was the last one -- you could make the case to make the move.
Really, the recruiting is pretty flat. We have a 6-10 project coming in and there really isn't much beyond on that. Doherty could chase off a couple and get a couple of JUCOs in May but your roster is what it is and the results are what they are. The Crum center can help the next regime. My boy the General wants to coach again. Nah, wishful thinking. I have no idea who would be a good fit for this job.

This guy just has that look of a CUSA head basketball coach.
Doh will be back next year. Guarantee it. Anybody want to take a legitimate bet? How about we pick a guy to hold the money?
I think you are right about the JUCO situation. IMO, Doh has to go that route & find a couple of immediate impact players. I don't think he can afford to go the "build the program the right way" approach anymore. Attached is an article about Alford & UNM that talks about the JUCO approach. http://www.abqtrib.com/news/2007/apr/11 ... fill-gaps/
