Certainly not a new story, but pretty detailed about the hiring of Wall's AAU coach and some different perspectives on it.
Gotta love the NCAA's ambiguous rules! SMU really needs to learn how to cheat without technically cheating...
[quote]NCAA bylaws prohibit programs from hiring individuals associated with recruits as an enticement. According to NCAA spokeswoman Gail Dent, universities also are prohibited from providing high school coaches with gifts to induce them to send their prospects to that school.
But the rules are ambiguous, at best. And while the NCAA has admitted concern and vowed to examine such dubious hires more aggressively, there seems to be no way to strictly regulate the hiring process at programs across the country without inadvertently impeding opportunity for, as Dent says, “individuals who may be involved with prospects but who are legitimate candidates for jobs.â€

If I said what I wanted to about Baylor's "recruiting" practices, I'd be accused of slander.

Big XII record: 2003-04 3-13 2004-05 1-15 2005-06 4-12 2006-07 4-12 2007-08 9-7 made the NCAA tourney 2008-09 3-2
'04 record was worse than '03. '05 and '06 were the same.
Not really Continually, and not a winning recored in conf play till '07.

Those first two season we're not Drew’s players and he had to clean house (similar to Doherty in his first two years here), but that third year you could see the potential and talent he was bringing in…..while they were young and still gelling, they were well coached and as I pointed out, they played the better teams in the Big XII close. Anyone who has followed that program over the past five years knows they have continually improved to become one of the better teams in the Big XII and a fringe top 25 team.

What people don't grasp is that despite it being an obvious ploy, Dwan Clifton is qualified for the position he took w/Baylor. Every bit as much as Damon Stoudamire is qualified for his position at Rice, or Rod Strickland is qualified for his position at Memphis
Also, for the first time since he's been at Baylor, I expect Drew to actually see some job offers come his way. For example, the newly opened Alabama job may take a look. If Maryland becomes available, he'd be on the list, albeit pretty far down. I don't think Drew's being overtly Christian and loud about it, gets him much consideration in College Park.
The sanctions Drew took on at Baylor were unbelievable. Then to be able to recruit to Waco, of all places, after a teammate killed another player, is nothing short of amazing. That said, he's set the table now, and needs to start performing on the court w/consistency.
“When I first committed to SMU, I thought it would take a couple of years of building. But with these players coming in, we should make a run. We have a lot of heavy hitters. It could get real ugly for a lot of teams we play.â€- Jalen Jones

Until the school is notified by the NCAA that it something, then the rumor mill about recruiting practices is one man's word vs. another. So there's really not a lot you can do about it.
This practice of hiring these coaches to get certain players goes as far back as Larry Brown hiring Ed Manning to ensure he'd get Danny. It probably goes back farther.
The ugliness shown toward Drew is really petty, but that's fine. Do what you gotta do. Maybe there's some jealousy there.
