Comparing this recruiting class with JJ's past classes

Postby SMU2007 » Tue Jan 27, 2009 9:53 pm

So can someone who knows more details talk about this incoming class compared to the last few JJ had at Hawaii? Just doing some quick Rivals searching:

2009 Mustangs: 1 four star, 6 three stars

vs.

2007 Hawaii: 0 four stars, 8 three stars
2006 Hawaii: only 2 star players
2005 Hawaii: 3 three star players

Sure there are transfers not factored in there but what do you guys think? Seems pretty solid. Especially considering the abomination of a year we had...

Interesting that Hawaii got 12 Three Stars this year.

When JJ left they increased the recruiting budget at Hawaii and one local airline offered free flights for Hawaii coaches. I guess it has paid off.

Non BCS teams that go undefeated and play in the sugar bowl usually see boost in recruiting.

All the publicity from a 12 win season, probably didn't hurt either.

Hawaii got a new practice field and a HUGE donation for a practice complex that came about because of publicity after JJ left about how bad the facilities were at UH. Many recruits have praised the new field and cited it as a factor when committing.

The football coaches offices are being redone, the foyer was just redone, the carpet in JJ's office at Hawaii was there since the 1970s or so, etc. There is no worry about not having soap in the showers now (believe it or not, that was a big problem), etc.

The recruiting budget was increased by more than 2x...I'm guessing 3x plus the free flights on Hawaiian Airlines. Hawaii also hired a recruiting coordinator who has been a HUGE help (I heard him talk about how he's organizing the recruiting efforts at a booster event when I was in Hawaii over Thanksgiving). It also helps that the recruiting coordinator was the defensive coordinator at a Vegas high school that has recruits on defense that are now Hawaii commits.

The big thing to me is that they fired Hawaii's AD the day after JJ left and the new AD has improved things significantly. There is a direction and a feeling now that things will get better...though the basketball and volleyball teams are struggling now, I have a lot of trust in the new AD and know that he is a smart, dedicated, and honorable man.

Sadly, there have been a number of decommits from the list that Stallion mentioned...and a couple more are quite likely to decommit in the next week if the rumors are true. Thankfully, other recruits are possibly going to switch their commits from other schools to Hawaii.

McMackin has also done an excellent job at giving early offers, increasing the number of camps, reaching out to the Hawaii high schools, etc. The coaches have been flying out to visit with recruits all over the mainland, taking multiple trips to key cities, something that probably wasn't possible with the previous recruiting budget.

Keeping the recruits in Hawaii to stay home and play for the Warriors is the key. So many of those recruits talk about how they "always wanted to be Warriors"...Hawaii was the Rainbows before JJ. JJ changed UH's from Rainbows to Warriors and upset so many of the older alums, but it helps with recruiting, especially because the Warrior teams won so much.

I am really amazed that our team of recruits are the level they are considering we only won one game this first year of Jones!!! If we don't do a lot better on the field this year(09)....our team of recruits next year will be sorely lacking...and far worse than this...These boys believe that we will win and I hope that is true....but we had better deliver something this year....Go Mustangs!!!

Hawaii's Athletic Director just provided the concrete numbers for the recruiting budget increase for Hawaii. Under JJ, Hawaii's recruiting budget was $50k. Hawaii's recruiting budget is now $110k, plus Hawaiian Airlines provided 100 free round-trip tickets to the Hawaii football coaches to use for recruiting purposes over the past year. If you estimate $500 per round trip ticket (short-notice flights could cost a lot more), the free airfare comes to another $50k for recruiting.

Why doesn't American Airlines or Southwest step up and provide free round-trip tickets for recruiting purposes for the home team SMU ?
