New RB/athlete?

Postby Dark Horse » Mon Dec 15, 2003 1:06 pm

Rivals is saying that Jo Jo Rawls (5-9, 170, 4.4) of Jefferson, Texas (where Jerry Bennett used to coach) is considering SMU, TCU and Baylor. No reports of any offers.

I like Rawls, but I don't see how he helps SMU enough to merit a scholarship. He's tough for his size, but to play at Div. I-A ball at his size, you have to be faster or amazingly elusive. Rawls isn't the most elusive player in the world; instead, he sometimes will lower a shoulder to try to run over someone, as if to show how tough/strong he is. That might work at a small-ish high school in east Texas, but he can't lower that shoulder and run over a college safety. At his size, he almost needs to have Jessie Henderson's speed or Blake Warren's elusiveness. Rawls is good, but Henderson and Warren are better.
